396 apco settings

Hey, i have a 396 and a 296 and i find that the 296 sounds clearer when listening to the same talk groups. like less digitized. i have set the 396 to "auto" and hit the function and tapped the scroll on top twice to change it. but i don't seem to find any optimized points (8 being defualt) soo is there a bettter way to tune this 396 , like i know there is manual option but how do i adjust that?
