Is there a cable available for the 396 that plugs into a USB port? I originally used my roommate's desktop PC to program my 396, but I just bought a laptop and cant use it on the 396 since the cable plugs into a serial port.

Uniden has one, the USB-1. Same cable would work on the 246, 330, 996, etc. Same cable available from Grove Enterprises , or Scannermaster. Probably some of the other online dealers would stock it also. Check for availability & shipping fees. Also, be sure to download the drivers specific to this adapter if you order it.Raven95150 said:
There are a number of USB to serial port converters available as well, that would "add" a virtual serial port to your laptop. Just another option.

If all else fails, try Radio Shack.
I found a converter on ebay for $6. That should do the trick. Rat Shack wants $30 for them. It will come in handy since I just downloaded 396PRO from butel with their 50% sale today.

I bought the Uniden usb cable and had nothing but trouble with it. I went to FRY,S and bought (4959741) USB to SERIAL adapter cable for 19.99. Works Great! You can probabbly buy just the adapter w/o a cable a little cheaper but I like the added length so I can move the scanner where I want it. The Uniden cable is a little short for my needs.
The one I bought off of ebay has a 4 foot cable.
I got the USB-1 from Grove and have had no problems with it. I move it between the 396, 996 and BCT-15 without any glitches.
