396XT or 996XT (not just portability)

My apologies in advance as I posted a similar question in the new users forum as a "portable or base/mobile" unit, however since I am specifically inquiring about Unidens it was suggested I post here.

I used to have a 785XLT that I parted with about 8 years ago. I've recently been trying a Pro-106 handheld and like it, but I've always had a true love for Uniden's. But I've found myself in a decision not about whether to go with the Radio Shack Pro or Uniden, but handheld or base/mobile.

I like what I've read about the 396XT and 996XT. Aside from the portability aspect between the handheld model and the base/mobile unit, what are your thoughts. Especially those who have or tried both. What are the pros & cons? Is one "really" better than the other?

Unlike the 396 and the 996, the XT's have the same features. Other than the base haveing a bigger display than the hand held there are no differances. If you can only get one it is always better to go witha hand held becuse if the power is out you still have a radio.
