Didn't an Alaskan airlines flight have this same trouble some time back? (rudder)

Not insinuating anything with that, but seems I remember that on the news back 10? years or so ago.

I worm screw problem, if that's the proper terminology for it in the industry.

All I know is the pilot was afraid to make left turns or "would have trouble" and preferred to do a 360* right turn to do a northbound approach. But I look at that flightaware thing above and I see they made a big ol' left over the ocean. Confusing but that's what I heard on the fly

The problem was electrical smell/smoke in the galley. Pilot sounded a bit concerned when they decided to divert.

I found the flight I was speaking of. This flight tonight was luckier.

"Alaska Airlines Flight 261 was scheduled to fly on January 31, 2000, from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to Seattle. The last few minutes of the flight saw an epic battle transpire as the pilots tried to keep control of the plane, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83.

A jammed stabilizer forced the crew to struggle to keep the plane from descending. At about 4:20 p.m., the pitch of the plane changed from 2.7 degrees to 70 degrees in less than 15 seconds, and within about a minute the plane hit the water."

This sure made for some interesting monitoring last night, and thanks to the guys in #wunclub, I would not have caught this otherwise! Seeing the flight path change course mid-route over open seas on the map was a bit eerie but I hope the crew and passengers made it to Oakland safely.

Yea, I caught it here, after they had turned back...went to online atc sites, and followed the flight thru center, to TRACON, to tower and then sat on ground control a bit, but never heard much followup. There was a delay, clicking from one to the other, so usually didn't get the initial call. Looked at the SF online paper this morning, and no mention. Probably with a safe landing, no problem, etc. it is not worth the mention.

Thanks for the update Nick.

I was just reading the comments section in that article. Gotta love this quote:
"I don't know what's scarier....electrical problems over the Pacific or being redirected to Oakland! "
