I am able to pick it up weakly with a stock antenna inside my house on my 396XT near Trinity & Precinct Line in East Fort Worth.

It is site 1-01.

That's the same as the license app noted in this thread from last November.

The listed location is the tower near DFR station 12, right near the edge of the ridge line (the hill you go up if you are headed east on I-20 from Grand Prairie), almost two miles south of I-20. That's on high ground, and should cover well into the mid-cities, in addition to the southern sector of the city.

I should have stated I heard it at hwy 360 and Carrier parkway. At first I thought it was hearing the nearby Grand Prairie 800 system but the CC audio was distinctly 9600 baud as compared to the 3600 baud signal. GP's site overpowers anything I am trying to listen to mostly in the 800 Mhz band but some "bleedover" in the 700 mhz band on the PSR500.

In north Bedford, on a 396XT, I'm getting 2-5 bars/of 5 on the signal meter when I hold on it.

I was talking to someone who told me that this is the first of what Dallas hopes to be a multi site system down the road for PD, FD, etc., and it's not the overlay thing(if I understood him correctly). He also thinks it will be used quite a bit for the Super Bowl.

There sure are a lot of new things to keep up with these days. I wish I would have bought more P25 capable scanners recently than I did.

That one site sure would not be enough to cover the entire city of Dallas, either from a pure coverage range standpoint, or number of frequencies available for talkgroups. So, if they plan on growing it into a city wide system, then that would make more sense if it's only one site among several.

that is the 700 mhz overlay system, Tarrant Collin and Denton are about to throw the switch in a couple of days so everybody be listening.... we are supposed to be getting our new radios 30 days after the acceptance testing with all the other sites online.... FYI its a 7.x smartzone system for wide area coverage. eventually there is going to be a tower in Johnson, Ellis, and Hill counties all tied in with ISSI with Parker Co. LCRA, HCRRS, and down in south texas. Its also going to utilize the exsisting voter sites in Dallas county, not just dallas city. so coverage should be excellent. and the control point on the licsence. thats wrong, its actually a voter site for city of dallas, dont know how that got put on there, but the actual system is down at Dawson Rd at the red and white self supporting tower. i know bwcause i have actually seen and touched the system....

Here are the freqs for the other 700 MHz overlay sites.
These are from CAPRAD online coordination database. I haven't checked to see if any other license have been issued. I know the NE Tarrant system is licensed. I don't know if any of the other sites are on the air.

The CC for site 1-01 that I posted the pro96com file for above has moved to 772.45625.

I am not picking up anything else in the 700MHz ban on my external antenna at this time.

Thanks for digging those out Tom. I'll program them all in conventionally, and wait to hear something.

Last I went by the Denton County site none of the gear had been installed for the overlay as of yet, nor have the licenses been issued for it that I can find yet, but I'll check the tower and ask around next week :D

Radio Shop guys were doing some tone and voice testing around 2pm on Thursday on TG #1. The tester must have had another radio in the background because you could hear the echo! They were testing the same alternating alert tone that Cockrell Hill FD uses, it sounded more crisp and clear on the digital system than on the 800 analog system. I get four bar signal strength on the control channel on my BC996T here in north Arlington.

snip.

This is very interesting as I spend quite a bit of time in Dallas. I just finished entering all of the frequencies into my 996. I must be missing something, so I have what I hope is not a stupid question.

Using the Dallas site as an example, how are they going to cram a huge city full of police and fire transmissions into four or five frequencies?

They aren't. It will be for interoperability. So let's say a chase starts in Fort Worth and is heading for Arlington. They can all switch to the wide area system on e.g. channel 'Interop 1'. Then let's say the chase heads through Grand Prairie and into Duncanville everyone can use the wide area system to communicate together instead of having to relay everything through a dispatcher.
