On my psr800 on the vhf band i have to use the global attenuation, my antenna is a discone at 40 feet and grounded. I don't have any very strong signals on that band, even the weather freq's come in but thay come in much better w/ atten. on plus i get not only the 162.400 , 162.475 which are the strongest, but i get the 500,and 525,550 also. when atten. And same w/ railroad freq' thay don't even come in unless there attenuated My first thought is overload from near by freq but i've checked from 140.0mhz to 174.0000 mhz. anyone have any idea's It does not happen w/ my other 800 on rubber duck antenna?

That is the way of GRE/RS scanners, certain antennas W/ATT on seems to bring in the signals from questionable distances better....On Uniden scanners if you use the "ATT" its gone!!....My 2096, GRE500, RS197 are the same way??....

A friend of mine tested his 4 scanners ... and the results were as follows.

The Uniden 396XT and 396T were identical .. they were 18 DB LESS sensitive then the PSR500, PSR800 he tested.

So .. as a result .. if you turn on the ATT on the Unidens the signal would be gone. If you turn on the ATT on the GRE units .. you were about the same as the Uniden models operating normally.

So .. that should help you out a little as to why things are the way they are.

It still do'nt answer my question as to why my signals come in way better w/attn on , and w/ the railroad freqs thay do'nt come in at all unless i use the atten., of course thats only w/ my discone... w/ the supplied ant. it acts normal. btw Thanks all for helping w/ this oddity... However i guess its what it is.. Thank's again to all ...

Well it does ... your front end of your radio is getting overloaded. Thus you need to turn on your ATT to be able to hear the signals.

I have seen this myself with my PSR500 ... turn on your ATT and you should be fine. The GRE radios are VERY sensitive, much more so than the Unidens.

These radios are not designed to be attached to outside antennas. Just use your rubber duckie .. and you will be fine.

Hope this helps ...

There is a chance that the signal causing your desense is not in the same freq range as the WX and RR signals. I have had a 2m signal desense a tv on low-band VHF.

If the signals of interest are causing the overload, you might get those signals "splattered" elsewhere, but you might not notice that without using the Spectrum Sweeper function.

A spectrum analyzer could be very useful, to help isolate the offending signal.
