I'm using ARC996 Pro with the Uniden Bearcat USB1 cable (with drivers loaded) and my HP pavilion laptop.

I had to go into safe mode to get ARC996 to even go into the communications setup screen without locking up my Win XP Pro. I set the com port of the USB port to com5 with a 57600 setting on baud. I set the 996 to front serial to 57600 as well.

And I get no communications between the two. I have tried just about every baud setting available.

I have a RS USB to serial cable but the serial port in the back of the 996 is the wrong sex.

Any thoughts and suggestions.

No personal experience with ARC products but is the software set to look for your 996 at the correct COM port?

Simple question but always good to start w/ the basics...

Are you attempting to use the connector on the back of the scanner?

Normally you should be using the port on the front of the scanner. The DB9 serial port on the back of the scanner is intended for connecting the GPS device. You can use the back connector if you use a null-modem cable, or null-modem adapter. The null-modem difference is that pins 2 & 3 are reversed on one end of the cable, from the other. As I recall, you also have to go into the configuration menu of the scanner, and tell it you're using the rear port for programming, and control, but I'm not positive on that one.

Connect to the front port of the 996. If it won't connect, use the auto detect scanner in the comm setup.

Yep, I'm using the front port on the scanner. I set the serial port settings to be on and all the speed combo's available.

The only way I can use the communication setup in ARC996 is when in Safe Mode and autodetect doesn't work. When I set the port and speed parameters it tells me the port is already in used or allocated by another program.

If I try to use the setup communications screen when not in safe mode the program locks up.

Are you running any type of Palm-Pilot, or Pocket-PC software? Do you have an internal dial-up modem? Fax software?

I never had a problem with any ARC stuff on a PC.. it connects right away.
Maybe its something in your laptop. The fact that you have to use safe mode means its something that is running that doesnt run while in safe mode.. so as another user said its a communication software like fax, or palm or something else you connect to the laptop with

I used to have a Treo 650. Think the software is causing a problem? I haven't removed the software yet.

You don't necessarily have to un-install it. Just disable the resident portion of the program. Do you have an icon for it in the lower right corner of your screen? If so, right click on it and do a quit, exit, etc. Or if it's in your StartUp folder, delete it from there. Then try the scanner again.

Thanks for all the replies. I ended up removing the Treo software and Norton and now I can access the communications setup screen but still no communications between the computer and the scanner. I even tried the firmware updater and it can't find the scanner either.

I have sent an email to Uniden with my phone number so hopefully someone will call.

Ok I just began playing with different settings and configurations. I found the problem.

My HP Bluetooth over serial was what was causing the problems. Once I disabled the Bluetooth devices I was able to get a connection to the scanner.

Hope this helps someone else down the road.
