I'm a long time but not sophisticated 996XT owner.
I have all of my county's fire talkgroups and related frequencies loaded per radio ref, the frequencies are loaded in order. (Carroll County, Maryland)
The problem is, I can hear talk on my actual fire walkie talkie when it scans while at the same time the scanner remains mute.
Unfortunately I'm never able to view the walkie's screen when this happens.
I could have sworn that I used to be able to have the 996XT scanning just this system and click the Search button and it would look for any and all activity and clicking scan would return it to it's current operations. Strangely, clicking Search doesn't change the display to indicate it is in that mode, it seems to ignore it.
What am I missing? Thanks y'all.

I'm not sure what your problem is but I suspect it has to do with the difference between Scanning and Searching ID's on a system.

ID Searching will allow you to hear every un-encrypted ID on the System.

ID Scanning lets you hear only the groups you have programmed in.

This explains the difference.

The display will let you know which mode you're in.

I'm attempting ID Searching.

To go from ID Search to ID Scan and back
FUNCTION then SCAN
Function being the large knob on the right surrounded by the Search/Scan, correct?
I'll try it again but I tried pressing that know then Search and I tried again pressing them at the same time.
Will advise when I get near the 996 again. (in a few hours). Thx.

Looks like I'm good on the first 996, will try the other one next time I'm in the truck.
Thank you all.

It could be that the TG you are on is locked out, a department it is in is locked out, or that you are simply desensing the scanner so it cannot hear the system while you are transmitting.
