I recently purchased a portable Eton radio for shortwave, aircraft band and FM radio for when I like to sit on one frequency and hang out. It does okay for BCB-DXing, and being able to fine tune on either side of a signal has been useful on a rare occasion or two, but the lack of an external AM antenna jack kinda goes with the territory on most, but not all lower end radios. But the thing is always falling over (I need it at the proper angle to see what I'm doing) and I don't like having to re-orient the radio all the time.
Now since I also do a fair amount of scanning, I purchased the Sangean voice activated recorder to record everything I miss while away and damn if it doesn't do a great job... and that's just utilizing the built in microphones! It sounds awesome. But I also saw a Sangean CL-100 weather radio that also does AM with an external antenna hookup as well. There is NO direct entry of stations, but when I'm DXing I tend to either keep it on one frequency or continually go up and down the band, so I can live without the direct entry.
I plan to play with it tonight and compare the CL-100 against the Eton on MW and see which comes out on top.
Anyway the recorder does excellent. I had my SDS100 about three inches from the microphones and recorded the excerpt attached below.
