Baofeng makes inexpensive ham equipment. Some models can tune FRS frequencies. OK to monitor, but not XMIT.
Can I use Baofeng on FRS?
It's still not legal because any transmitter used on FRS, or the other Personal Radio Services, must have FCC equipment certification for Part 95. Baofengs aren't certified. That certification requires that an FRS radio must have a permanent antenna and must be channel selectable and not frequency tunable.
The Baofeng UV-5X (also named UV-5G) is a LEGAL GMRS handheld radio (FCC certificated). This radio extends all the functions from UV-5R but transmits only on the GMRS channels. It adds NOAA Weather Alert.
Ahh, kinda like "Mighty Fine Junk". I've been out of Amateur Radio for years, packet was dying off and everyone I used to talk to is now dead. A Baofeng is probably better than what I used to make the FRS segment though (the green transceiver on the right).
Radios are sure a LOT cheaper then when I bought mine. I still have my HT's, my first portable, the 22AT I seem to recall was around $230, but the 79AD was quite a bit more. Now they sit a drawer 99.999% of the time. Someday I may want to use them as scanners. It' not like they are worth anything now.
