Many expect new SDR based radios to cost $199 or less from a retail stores, but those same individuals demand Barrett-Jackson classic car pricing when selling a used radio that is somehow enhanced because it has been 'barely used', comes from a 'smoke-free home', kept in a 'positive pressure ventilated room', and has the original box.

Pre-owed is used. It does not earn Additional Valuation or Seller Mark-up.

QRM from other hams. In the UK you get 10 Watts at level 1, 'Foundation licence'. 3 years ago when the current solar cycle was somewhat less progressed than now 10W on SSB phone even with a reasonable single band wire antenna portable is/was a challenge.

To find a frequency only to be blotted out by another ham not hearing you at all and calling a few kHz up or down is quite frustrating. Moving freq, starting again, then being QRM'd then moving....and so it went on.

As a full licence holder and with now a much higher feed point I put out a good 100W source signal and most know I am there. That made a very big difference it almost got to the point where it put me off being a ham at all.

In this regard CB channelization seemed quite superior at the time.

My only out of Europe contact was N.E. Canada on the 10 Watts on 20M.

How cheap hams are... they'll spend hours chasing a 1:1 SWR yet buy 25 cent PL259s.

And how they will buy the cheapest absolute garbage radios. Then try to sell their 40yr old radios for brand new prices.
I hope none of these cheap hams ever get interested in photography. They'd have a massive coronary at the prices of higher end digital cameras and lenses. And it's one hobby where you can still get top dollar for used gear in good condition. I have cameras and lenses I bought 25 years ago I could liquidate for pretty close to what I paid for them.

Not surprised that hams 'act' like everyone else........
I was surprised that I was able to copy 20-25 wpm in a matter of weeks as a novice ('67)
Surprised when the first DX answered my call. (home brew, XTAL controlled, 6L6, PI network, to a dipole for 40/15 meters)
And not surprised when the FCC sent me a letter for RFI of a very nasty (to me) next
door neighbor and proved I was not in violation.
Also not surprised that I've made some life long friends through the hobby.
