Over the past few days, as I have listened to many feeds, I was wondering why we don't have a chat on some of these feeds. It'd be interesting to see what others are saying during major events (such as the LA Forest Fire feed now) and what not.

Just a thought...

The Android phone App Scanner Radio now has feed chat.

Would it be possible to embed an IRC chat function on an RR page. When we visited that page it would automatically log us in with our RR user ID and then we could switch to the appropriate feeds chat section. Or you could just make each state 1 of the chat sections. I'm not sure if that is possible but would be fairly interesting.

Thanks Lindsay, I am not sure how many of my users would use it but it might help take care of some of the complaints about the feed from some users.

I recently integrated a "Posting Room" Not a Chat Room, on my site (If I were to call it a chat room, posters would put in a lot of unrelated junk). It was a very interesting learning experience.
My goal was to have people post relevant information that was heard on the scanner along with professional discussion. Also a place to come to and find out what is going on with the local Police and Fire.
The result was a lot of trash talk.
My solution was to monitor all posts and have very strict guidelines that serve as the only warning prior to deleting the post or banning the poster. My recommendation is give it a lot of thought before you start a chat page. A "trash talking" chat page can make a site no one wants to come to.

As I mentioned in an earlier reply, Scanner Radio fro Android phones has chat rooms for the feeds.

Most of the chats are junk or trash talk so ScanYak is correct.

I would not want to admin or monitor this kind of chat room for my feeds.

I agree Richard, however having played for years on IRC, having a system such as a "channel op" and having the feed owner responsible for assigning said ops, the trash can be kept to a minimum. The trash talkers and spammers become known and banned pretty quickly. Yes it can cause some hurt and bad feelings but for the regular user, it can be an invaluable resource.
Maybe a JAVA IRC client? And have scanner specific rooms?

Just an Idea.
