• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have a mix of used trbo radios and they all sound pretty quiet to me, even at 80% volume, in fact even at maximum volume they don’t sound that loud. Before I go in the CPS and start playing with all of the mic gains, what is the proper procedure to set the volumes? I may be able to get access to a VNA or SA If that would be needed.

What radios are you using?
Try changing the audio profile to loud environment. This might solve your problem because it does make the radio louder.
General Settings>Audio Profile>Environment>Loud

EDIT: If you can, I would also suggest getting RX audio leveling for the radios. It's a $3 EID and it is worth every penny. (If they support it)

I have xpr5000 and 7000s. I bought them mixed used so will have to see if some already have that EID or not. Can I buy EIDs if my subscription to CPS a has expired? I guess more of can I install EIDs on radios if I am not on CPs subscription.

Yes, you absolutely can. I will include a link of the website I buy my EIDs from and just order how many you need and they usually have a pretty fast turnaround time. If you need help installing the features, just ask.

(I'm not sure why the link says enhanced privacy, but it is the right link)

+1 on this. Digital is almost unusable without RX Audio Leveling.
I don’t find this at all. None of my radios have this feature, & I’m not suffering. Around here, most users have Moto radios, & set the AGC to on. The few that have CCR’s set their TX audio correctly, so there isn’t really a need for the EID. However our system is not on any network such as Brandmeister, or D-Marc, so hot spots don’t come into play. On the one local system that is on Brandmeister, it’s the hot spots that cause the terrible audio with choppy missing syllables, and huge differences in TX audio.

Good. I'm not a fan of spending $3 on a feature that should have been built into the radios, but it is an absolute necessity on some of the commercial systems around here. There are massive volume swings to the point that you have to keep your finger glued to the volume knob. This is a mixture of bad audio profiles and bad user habits, and poor audio handling in the radios.

When all of the radios are set up by competent people from the get-go the audio will be good. Glad you have a good "local" system.

I agree with @Floridarailfanning on this one. I'm all for not spending the money for additional features but as someone that listens to some DMR public safety systems (and the occasional HAM repeater), RX audio leveling on digital is a MUST. I'll give you this example. A unit was calling dispatch and that unit was very quiet so I naturally turned up my volume and then dispatch was way to close on the mic and almost blew my eardrum out. 90% of people in public safety just know to press a button and talk. They don't know that if they aren't close to the mic they won't be heard. Hams are usually better with this but you will still have that one guy with an $80 radio that sounds nothing like the guy with a $500 radio.
