ok, so I was messin with my pro97 today and I was doing a service search on police/fire group 3 (851-869mhz) and it landed on 854.8375 with the distinctive edacs control ch noise ... so, I look up the frequency and its licensed to AEP (big suprise lol) ... but here is the catch, in the database for AEP in VA the closest site is about 20 miles away from me, and I have it programed into my bct15 and the ctrl ch doesnt match ... and better yet, that frequency isnt listed in the rr database .... oh, and I threw it in a bank and its decoding at a constant 99% (the closest AEP site decodes around 80% at best) .... I'm baffled and I don't know how to figure out any more info on this site like the other freqs.... My Pro97 is brand new to me so I really dont want to modify it for a discriminator tap to hook it to unitrunker or somethin ... any ideas?

Thanks, I think the call sign for the freq I found is WPCQ257 ... I looked it up on that link you gave me and it had a total of 3 frequencies listed, none of which are listed in the RR AEP database anywhere near me in VA ... also, is there any way I can use unitrunker in this situation without a tap (i already know the answer, but i dont like it haha)

edit: anybody near Dismal Peak or possibly Roanoke that could UniTrunker this bad boy and see whats up? thanks :)

AEP has a site on High Peak (aka Tobacco Row Mountain) in Amherst north of Lynchburg, and I believe also Poor Mtn.

Dismal Peak -- isn't that near Pulaski?

yeah its in Pulaski ... there is a 2M ham repeater up there that I get pretty well ... and according to that license that is where this control channel is coming from ... I'm just trying to find the other LCNs so I can have a TRS to listen to (that actually comes in), since I can't get Roanoke from where I am haha ...

Not sure, but...

I'm not sure about this, but, I wonder if this is just a transmitter used to "link" some of their northern trunked sites (Power Plants) down into the south.

We have the AEP General James M. Gavin plant here in our county.

We hear them talking to plants WAY down the eastern seaboard every so often. We can hear both ends of the traffic to, so, they'd HAVE to have something in between here and there to make it all go.

They even have their "own" telephone system "networked" into their radio system too...

Steve/KB8FAR

If they are anything like Dominion, they have their own microwave system linking all plants and ops offices. Can't depend on the public phone system in a major emergency.

AEP covers some of this area, I guess I need to put it in a scanner and listen from time to time. I listen to Dominion during outages, sometimes I can figure out when power is restored in an area.

well, while I was watching the CC decode on the screen I saw a few diff talk groups come up from time to time ... now, I dont know much about UniTrunker but would it be possible to use it (if I tapped the pro97...) and see the other freq's and their LCNs ?

Way out there...
Aep

There is a site on Bull Mountain in Patrick County, it is linked to the site in Danville or Whitmell. Doubt you are hearing Whitmell, but the Bull Mountain site covers Patrick, Henry, Franklin, and Floyd.

AEP Va. TRS sites

AEP has a network of 800 mhz. EDACS TRS/6 ghz. Microwave links analog full duplex network covering from Ohio, part of W. Va., western Va. and other selected locations in between, i.e., possibly Kentucky.

1. The Va. AEP TRS sites typically are located west of Tobacco Row Mtn. near Lynchburg. Some of the TRS sites listed by city probably are located on a nearby mountain or high elevation.

TRS Location, City/County

Fleming Mountain, Bedford
Sugar Grove, Smyth
Big A Mountain, Russell
White Gate, Giles
Grundy, Buchanan
Hansonville, Washington
Whitetop Mountain, Grayson
High Knob, Wise
Fancy Gap, Carroll
Lovingston, Nelson
Mt. Cross, Pittsylvania
Tip Top, Tazewell
Pulaski, Pulaski
Lynchburg, Lynchburg(Tobacco Row Mtn.)
Clintwood, Dickenson
Salem, Salem (Poor Mtn.)
Patrick Springs, Patrick
Penhook, Franklin
Rustburg, Campbell
Smith Mountain, Pittsylvania

2. The callsign you referenced, WPCQ257 addresses licensed operation for AEP TRS sites at White Gate, Giles Co., Tip Top, Tazewell Co., Pulaski, Pulaski Co. and Salem, Salem city. Frequencies licensed for only the Salem TRS (Poor Mtn.) operation are 856.3125, 857.4125, 858.4125, 859.4125 and 860.4125 mhz. I am not listing all the frequencies for the other TRS sites. I am not within ground reception range of any AEP TRS site and do not have any TRS LCNs.

3. Approximately 10 years ago I did a portable satellite tv installation on the roof of the downtown AEP Va. headquarters for a satellite teleconference to be held there. From there is a AEP 6 ghz. microwave link that allows their offices to connect to the network and as previously mentioned the network is full duplex covering most of western Va. part of W. Va. and part of Ohio. I recall my AEP POC telling me they had frequent comms with a power station north of Roanoke. At the time I was very concerned that their microwave link would cause TVI and ruin the satellite tv teleconference. Fortunately it did not.

You may get lucky and not need a discriminator tap. Try feeding the audio from the earphone port to your sound card and run UniTrunker. It may be enough signal to work for EDACS. You may need to experiment with the 97's volume setting and record input settings on your sound card to make it work. You can check the waveform using the UniScope. I've read where someone had some luck doing this, but the signal quality was ~50% or less.

no luck, I gave it a shot but it still wouldn't pick up on it ... I noticed in the RR db for AEP that network 5 site 11 (white gate) is missing LCN 01 and the primary control channel ... would it be possible that the one I stumbled upon (854.8375) is the CC? is there anyone near Pulaski or maybe in Roanoke that can pick it up and see if they can figure this out haha .. thanks everyone :)
