Im off today, but I called the Bham PD radio room for another matter and mentioned what I had heard. They confirmed that Bessemer had called Bham PD asking what our procedures are for a plane down. Bham referred them to the airport.
Therefore, the crash may be closer to Bessemer than Plesant Grove, but thats the only info I have. Nothing on the local media yet and I cant pick up Bessemer from my location.

I have Civil Air Patrol, "Bessemer Mission Base", on 148.125 (tone 114.8) attemptting to contact ground teams. One ID heard is "Goldren Rod 400". Appears they are having trouble communicating. "Mission Base" is on repeater and the ground teams appear to be on simplex. Just heard "Mission Base" calling CAP Flight 160 and 184 again on repeater and the aircraft appear to be on simplex just taking off. The repeater is coming in strong here is Jacksons Gap.

Update

FROM THE BIRMINGHAM NEWS:

Small plane wreckage found in Jeffco
Jefferson County authorities said this afternoon they have found the wreckage of a small plane that may have crashed Friday evening in western Jefferson County.
Sgt. Randy Christian said the plane belonged to a couple from Hornersville, Mo. Hornersville is located in the Missouri boot heel. The husband and wife left Missouri at about 8 a.m. Friday and were headed to Marathon, Fla. Christian said the couple did not file a flight plan and may have been reported missing Sunday evening. He said the Civil Air Patrol alerted the Sheriff’s Department this morning.
The Sheriff’s Department searched by helicopter from 8 this morning until the wreckage was spotted this afternoon. The wreckage is about a mile into the woods, Christian said. Christian said residents did not report hearing a crash.
“The area is so barren, it would not be unusual for anyone not to report hearing anything,” he said.

Plane Wreckage Discovered In Jefferson County

Monday, Feb 05, 2007 - 02:56 PM

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. – On Monday around 2 p.m., Jefferson County authorities discovered the wreckage of a light airplane that originated out of Missouri.

The plane, believed to be a 1970 model Cessna 172, was headed to Alabama from Hornersville, Mo., on Friday when it disappeared. The pilot did not file a flight plan, but it is believed that the plane was destined for a family visit in Florida.

The search for the plane began Sunday afternoon after relatives contacted authorities regarding the missing aircraft.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies discovered the plane Monday afternoon near the Jefferson-Tuscaloosa County line, near Mud Creed Rd. Authorities confirmed that two people died in the crash.

The FAA is currently on their way to the site to begin an investigation.

Not sure if CAP or STAR 1 found the wreckage first, but both were on the scene early, communicating on 123.1 mhz and JeffCo Bess/River TG on JeffCo trunked system. Should have jumped in earlier I guess, but got busy listening and forgot.

Reserves brought out the humvee, weight detail furnished 4X4, and someone brought in an ATV for transporting from Mud Creek Road to crash site east of Mud Creek Rd. about 1 1/2 miles back into the woods toward Valley Creek and between No. 3 Mine and Oak Grove Mine. No. 3 Mine sent a bulldozer to help clear a path to the scene.

AirLink 33/40 arrived right away, and communicated with STAR 1 on 123.1.

The search was concentrating on the Bibb/Jefferson line early in the morning, and shifted to the area of the crash later in the day, concentrating on a five mile radius area around a cell phone tower where the last signal was received from the plane.
