Anyone have an idea who TGID 1648 is out at the Salt Lake Airport?
When trunking was first being installed in preparation for the Winter Olympics there were a lot of commercial concerns that "shared" transmitter sites including The Airport Authority. There is one trucking company in town that would pop up on the Airport's site quite regularly. That was taken care of just prior to the Olympics.

I cannot find anything in my old dusty printouts of TGs that has that TGID nor have I ever seen it on my scanners.

Could it be possible that this might be a stray? What kind of traffic is on it?

Could not catch enough of the conversations to really make a good guess. I only pick it up when I am right out by the airport. I drive through there on I-80 everyday going to and from work and just catch it occassionally.

Likewise I could not find it on any list and initally thought I had saw the ID wrong. Have not given up on it still hope to hear more and make a guess.

I had a meeting out by the airport today and was able to copy the following for TalkGroup 1648:

"Hey Greg, Your Up"
"Copy"

"Whats the hold up?"
"Equipment malfunction, we should be good now"

Over two hours

I spent over two hours locked on to this TG (1648) and it was mostly silent the entire time. The only traffic I heard had to do with being relieved to take a lunch break (that happened for two people) and at one point there was a couple of short sentences about a motor overheating, a jam, and at one point a gal requested some help...no specifics.

I think this is a private enterprise renting space on the airport's site (Sysid 3521) and that they are tending a conveyor system or something similar. It is possible that this could be baggage handlers, but I would expect more voice traffic in that case.

Anyway, in my opinion, this is an insignificant TG that does not warrant any further concentrated monitoring, at least on my part. I will leave the TG open (not locked out or removed) just in case something pops. Your mileage might vary.

I have also noticed an update in the Airport Authority's Database. TGID 1328 (TAC - Maintenance) has either been added or changed, I'm not sure which since I don't have it programmed into my scanner...yet.

I captured this the other day when I was out there. Two maintenance people were talking and they said "Switch to TAC" and that is where they went. They treated it like a Car to Car channel but for the maintenance department. It was not previously listed so I had the Admin add it to the list.

I picked up another piece of radio traffic on TG 1648 this afternoon, Tuesday, July 3rd. It simply consisted of a sentence, "Jam on X 3 dash 12." The male voice said it twice. I still think this is a crew monitoring a conveyor system. I sure would like to positively identify it. I hate loose ends!

Thanks a lot, Rolfman and bneilson.

I have monitored similar traffic. One day I heard someone asking about how many scanners were running and wondered if this might be the TSA that scan the luggage. Sorry to torment you with this.

Okay, good news...well, maybe. I stayed locked on to TG 1648 from about 9:00 am today until after 2:45 pm (still locked on, actually) and heard the following. It is really hard to hear exactly what they say because they tend to start talking as they are keying the mic and so most of the time the first words are not readable.

Mostly I heard them talking about jams, clearing them, and relieving one another for lunch. Then I heard one of them say, "Delta is talking about shutting down one of the lines because they are shorthanded today." Another voice then came on (sounded like a manager or something) and said to go ahead and shut a line down.

Then there was some discussion about Ticket Counter #2 and, "TX 1 is going down. Delta called the jammer."

After hearing these things today, I might have to agree with Rolfman. I still don't know if it is baggage handlers or TSA. It seems to me that either one should generate more voice traffic, but without seeing their operations it would be hard to say for sure.

At this point it is still all conjecture but I think "we" might be getting closer. I just need ONE clear, concise, specific sentence to identify them, but I don't know what that sentence might be.

It would be nice if someone else could also concentrate on trying to monitor this TG but I know that not everyone is geographically located to do that. Another thing I don't know yet is if they are also on there in the evening and night hours. As it is now, I haven't heard a peep out of them since about 1:30 pm - over an hour.

So here are some questions for y'all:

(1) Are the baggage handlers employees of the Airport Authority or are they employees of the individual airlines? I would think the individual airlines but the conveyor system(s) has to be Airport Authority property...I think.

(2) If this is TSA, wouldn't you expect them to be on a Federal radio system (TG)?

(3) If this is TSA, why no traffic about individual bags being pulled for inspection?

Help me out here, guys.

Voila!

B I N G O !

Ask and ye shall receive!

Just monitored:

"...request to shut down X3."

"Who requested it?"

"TSA."

A few moments later:

"There are bags still going through."

So, these are baggage handlers.

I have the definitive answer......

As a user of said Airport's TRS, that TGID is assigned to ERMC, the contractor that is responsible for the new baggage screening building. TSA does NOT, I say again NOT have access to our system, except during special events, and only then if we give them a radio. Their radios are not compatible with our TRS (there is a higher power somewhere :) ).

Now, all of that being said, Salt Lake City and the SLC Airport are in the process of merging their two radio systems into a three site simulcast system. As a result, all of the CC's and many of the TGID's are going be changing over the next couple of months. Unfortunately, I don't have a complete listing of the new ID's yet, but as soon as I get them, I will have the Admin update all the sites.

Cheers!

Hey, Fod, I think I kinda ruled OUT TSA in my post above. I didn't know who was operating on that TG and by a series of (bad) guesses determined it was (with my limited exposure to airport operations) "baggage handlers."

I sure wish we had heard from you before I burned about 7 hours locked on to that TG.

Now, humor an old man and tell me what "TRS" stands for. Please.
