They had some copper thieves come in and ransack their transmitter site.

Im guessing Coax? But if they replaced it to get back on air how would they have a worse signal?

A real problem

I'm an on-air operator at an Oklahoma City tv station and I used to work for another station. (we move around a lot in this industry). At my previous station our shack got hit. We installed a webcam that now watches activities at the shack 24/7. As for AM, if the copper thieves only knew where most of the copper wire really is. The hint is that its not on the tower or in the building.

Hmm...not in the tower or building you say? Please provide more hints for the copper thieves out there. Thanks.

But... I bet it's more work than it's worth getting at it.
They'd be there all day.

Not too much left to the imagination there....

And a truck and a shovel can pull that stuff up quick. Any
radio station owner should have cameras or some kind of
security.

Well, the last guy I knew who tried to get it, wound up pulling the bumper off his truck as he fled. He left his tag. He's just now finishing up his pre-trial diversion on that offense and still has probation to complete. Copper thieves like to get in and get out very quick. This friend showed me how fast he can trash an A/C unit and get the coils out. He did it legitimately for a heat and air contractor who hired him to junk out a bunch of obsolete a/c units (or trade ins). It boggles the mind how fast they can do it. He does it so fast because he uses an acetylene torch.

AM towers generally have several copper ground wires connected to the base of the tower and buried just under the surface of the ground. There are typically 120 of these wires that form a very effective ground plane for the 1/4-wavelength tower.

This is the copper that the thieves are after.
