I wrote to Uniden and was surprised that I got an answer at all.

I asked because of the number of systems which are proprietary was/is there any discussions about making a scanner capable of "hearing" those systems. Here is the answer I recieved.

Bob
WB3DYE

While Uniden would like to make scanners compatible with those systems, the digital formats used by those systems are proprietary to their manufacturers, who are not interested in licensing such formats for use in scanners. Unless there is a change in those manufacturer’s position, don’t look for any scanner manufacturer to provide compatibility.

Not the answer I want to be giving, but unfortunately that is all the answer there is.

You could have asked here and I would likely answered, too (if no one beat me to it).

Paul:

I believe in getting the info "from the horses mouth" I appreciate the reply. My next stop will be Radio Shack. I will be posing the same question to them ;-)

Paul....I didn't realize you cruised the PA forum...although I'll admit I'm not sure where you/Uniden are located.

I hit "New Posts" a couple of times a day looking for relevant posts...I really don't pay much attention to what forum the post is in.

I really prefer open posts in forums (as opposed to emails, letters, and private messages) because:

1) Questions are seldom unique...if I can answer in an open forum, then many others have the benefit of the reply.
2) I'm not the only one with the answer (and often I don't have the answer for region/system specific questions), so posting in an open forum will mean that someone else who has the answer might be able to get to it before I do.
3) I have other responsibilities (and recreations) that I need (or want) to be doing, so if #2 above can take care of the question w/o my spending time on it, I have more time to do those other things.

We are in Fort Worth, TX (just S of DFW airport).

Why ask Radio Shack? They don't make thier own scanners. They take units from Uniden or GRE and put thier own face plate on them.

Hey Paul,

Im having an issue with my 996.

Basically the scanner will not scan an Motorola Type II SmartZone, APCO25 system. I know i have programmed it correctly as i have my 396 running beside it as well as a reference. The one really odd thing i am noticing is that the scanner is showing me that its associated to 156.2100 "NFM".....the kicker here is that there is no frequency in that range programmed into the scanner!!!! Only a main and alternate control channel (142.90500 - 142.68000).

Now i also tested it on an 800mhz Motorola Type II SmartZone system (non digital) and it works fine!

Only thing to mention is that i just did a firmware update...but that should not have any bearing on the issues I'm having.

Any ideas...or do i now have a really expensive BCT15? <sigh>

Maybe it is just me, but when I read threads I am usually thinking about other things as it relates to the topic. So here is how my brain was (mal)functioning whilst reading this thread:

"ummm .. why would anyone feel the need to post this information? This stuff is hashed out all the time around here, he must be new guy. Nope, I see he is a subscriber and he joined in 2003. hrmmm, mabey he doesn't really read stuff or know what the search button is for ... "

So I keep reading and come across:

Oh well, there you go! :D

And then a quote worthy enough for anyone's sig line:

brey1234, I know all of this is at your expense, but please remember that we have a ton of members who are extremely knowledgeable enough to give authoritative answers. The good news is that you can usually figure out who do not know what they are talking about pretty quick.

And then ... *sigh* ... we have people like, for example, zz0468 who are a) slightly funny if at all, and b) monologue’s on the most useless topics. Does anyone really care that zz is too old/fat/lazy/all-of-the-above to climb an antenna tower? Again, for example, instead of encouraging discovery, he/she/it brushes aside the poster with his latest post of:

Doesn't Agilent have a users group or something? This isn't the right place for questions like that. Most of the people here are hobbyists who like to listen to scanners, not RF engineers using tools like Momentum.
Even though RHCP and LHCP are valid antenna concepts ...

oops. I'm going off topic. Sorry. Morons and ID Ten T's tend to make me monologue too ...

:)
