Yes folks, I passed my technician's test.

The guy even told me I only missed one question on the whole test...

Now I need to figure out which radio I want and how to install the thing...

Okay. What is the highest you want to pay. Have you done any research as to what is in your area. i.e. 2 meters or 440 or both. Mobile or base or HT? Am sure there will be a few jump in here. I have a Icom 2200 just 2 meters and a Kenwood V71A dual bander and 2 HT's Icom T2A and a vertex 150. don't think you can buy the HT's like mine anymore. Not sure of that. Vx 150 is a nice 2 meter HT. Both of my mobiles are interchangable at the house. Prefer the V71A but the 2200 does an outstanding job.

Oh and by the way. Congrats on passing and keep studying for the high class licenses.

So far I have three radios in mind. I have been looking all over the place at them.

At present I am leaning towards the Kenwood D710A.

Also in the running is the Yaesu 350AR and the Kenwood V71A.

As you may notice, they are all dual band radios. Personally I like the dual display.

Yet another contender is the Yaesu 8800.

And finally, its not a dual display, but the price is much lower...a Yaesu 7900.

There are two schools of thought... get a cheaper radio until I learn the ropes...and get something better later... or get something good from the get go and not have to worry about it.

I don't want to spend 1500 bucks on the whole rig, but I am not entirely price sensitive either.

Dual bander is the way to go. go to eham.com and read the reviews there. If you have that's a good thing. I bought my V71A from universal radio for 359 bucks. another place to look is Gigaparts. I suggest very strongly if you get the V71A that you get the programming cable and the extention kit. I can't help with the 350AR. I did the research on it and the D710A. D710A is a nice rig. It was in the running before I got the V71A. Came down the $$$. My buddy has the 8800 and he likes it. His only gripe was the itty bitty knobs. If you have big fingers, check it out.

Hey Lin. How ya doin??? How's the 107 doing? Heard any interesting stuff?? Alamo5000 passed his test for the Technician class for ham radio. Just trying to give a little advice to a new ham. I have been doing the ham thing since 1985. I talk once in a while to the folks up in your area on 2 meter FM.

Congratulations to the new member of the amateur radio community.

I have two radio's a Yaesu FT-2800M which is my primary at home, and a Kenwood TH-G71A. Both where fairly inexpensive, and my HT was bought used. I did have some problems with it, and ended up sending to Kenwood for repairs -- twice -- because they had to fix it twice. But it works fine now.

In considering dualband radios you probably should check the Icom IC208H. Not dual display but has everything else, including 900 mHz ham band monitoring, 222 mHz monitoring, AM aircraft band, 1000 memories, etc. I use three of them currently, one at home, one in the car, and one at the condo.

Welcome to hamming. I don't think you'll ever regret getting your license.
