Good Evening. I have always owned Uniden Scanners, and programmed them manually as I enjoy it.

However, I just bought the PRO 106 and because the programming seems so difficult to me I am going to use Win 500.

I've searched everywhere for this answer before asking it here. I prefer doing my "home work" first before asking for help.

Question: If I use Win 500 to download a trunked, analog/digital data from Radio Reference, does this automatically "program" my pro 106 for the proper system. ? Or must I program it first manually for a motorola trunked system then just download the talkgroups? I hope this makes sense. Don't know how else to say it.

One more question: With a Uniden, you can program a "System" with numerous "groups" in that system. That allows you to turn groups off and on while still staying on that system. Does the Pro 106 do this ??

Thanks for your help

Please...don't everyone answer all at once. I'll get brain overload. (JUST KIDDING) :p

Today I took the plunge, used WIN 500 and my RS Cable, and successfully programmed my PRO 106. :D I have always been a UNIDEN guy and could program manually. This WIN 500 made life so easy and worked perfectly. I bought the PRO 106 because of all the great reviews it received and it was on sale, but the programming somewhat intimidated me.

I do notice a fairly short battery life when using Ni-MH batteries. Has anyone else had the same problem? I got only a few hours off of them while programming, although I was running the back light.

Depends on the mAh of the batteries. Mine are 2800mAh so I can run almost 20 hours off one charge.

HOWEVER

I do NOT charge them with the scanner. I use a desktop charger that completely drains them to the proper voltage before charging. Kinda like stretching your muscles before a heavy lift. Also, the scanner only times the charge when it is ON. Turn it off and it will charge them until it burns out.

And yes, using the light shortens op time considerably.

If you love Win 500 now, wait until you figure out just what you can really do with it! :)

Thanks Fred. I am learning a great deal about WIN 500, mostly by mistakes, but learning nonetheless. Yesterday my Police dispatch kept coming across on my fire system. Took forever to figure out but I see you can assign "objects" to other talk lists as well. Really Nice. Also there is an extra control for the back light in WIN 500 - - you can set the back light to come on when the scanner breaks squelch.

Appreciate the advice.

Thanks Frank. I printed it out about a week ago and used it as my programming bible. It was a great help.
