Although I don't have one, I have heard they are pretty good.

Also good for lawn darts.

Ground Plane

Looks kind of cumbersome. I use an Antenex DEXE806BNX which is 2.5dB gain at 806-866 MHz. Works great.

It would appear to me that the greatest feature of this antenna is that of being a true groundplane, not using the body of the radio as the grounding element, per se. I think carrying it around in your shirt pocket, however, could at times become uncomfortable, especially if you wear thinner fabrics. Imagine trying to explain your injuries at the ER...I also use the 1/2 wave Antenex which is a great antenna.

So far I would say don't waste your money on this antenna. I got it this am, and to tell you the truth I have a rubber duck 800 band antenna that works better. I will bring it to the northern meeting so everyone can see it, but again I would not waste your money.

The RadioShack 800Mhz antenna has more gain vs. the Antenna you just bought. But remember too much gain can be bad for your radio.

How does the Antenex compare to the RS 800 rubber duckie? I have the RS antenna, but was considering the Antenex SM version for the 396t since it might look cleaner. Also interested if it has any sensitivity on UHF/VHF.

Hey Liverdog -

I actually have both. I truthfully can't tell much difference in received signal on 800Mhz between the two antennas. Whatever difference there is, is negligible, IMHO. The Antenex is a true 1/2 wave, and since you're using an SMA connector instead of a BNC to SMA adapter, as you do with the RS antenna, you're not going to get the added loss which you get with the RS antenna. However, monitoring my radio's S-meter, I've never noticed much of a difference.

I think the Antenex looks nicer, though. I use a 396T scanner, and I can tell you that both antennas are miles ahead of the Uniden stock antenna.
