• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I forgot to ask you yesterday if you'd noticed (as I "think" I did) that the "purple" antenna was slightly more sensitive to 760 MHz signals than the "blue" antenna? It would seem to make sense that it might if the "blue" antenna was tuned to center more narrowly around 850 MHz, instead of spreading itself between 763 and 870 MHz.

In my experience, there's no discernible difference between them at 770Mhz, observing dBm on the control channel of a site that's not intended to cover my area. The dBm number varies a bit (-108 to -110), so it'd be difficult to observe a subtle difference this way.

Maybe the blue antenna is tuned for 850 MHz, but it's clearly labeled as 763 to 870 MHz.

That's certainly true, bob550, but fixed-length antennas have a somewhat-narrow peak resonance range, no matter how they're labeled. I'm guessing that Unication re-designed the "blue" antenna (by shortening its internal element?) to resonate a little more effectively at 850 Mhz than does the "purple" antenna. The "purple" antenna may have been tuned to resonate somewhere between 870 and 763 Mhz (perhaps at around 816 Mhz?).

I'm sure my comment above will be viewed by smarter antenna experts as a gross oversimplification, but I think it's probably pretty close to the mark for the Unication external antennas, which I suspect are helical.

Feel free to fire away, folks!

I would love to see a Remtronix made for the G5 I don't like adapters
I'll second the Remtronix! I do use an adapter with a RadioShack (Remtronix) BNC antenna and there is a definite improvement to the signal strength even over the blue extra-gain antenna. I'd suppose the length may have something to do with that. But I've found that the blue antenna works well enough in most cases, and has the advantage of being very low-profile.

Look at the ExpertPower SMA Female to BNC Female Convert Adaptor for the BaoFeng UV-5R FD-880 on Amazon. I use this adaptor on my G5 and it works well and is low profile.
