I am thinking about buying a GMRS two way radio. Looks like you need an FCC license to operate on the GMRS band. The FCC wants $85.00 for a 5 year license. Sounds kind of high to me. If there was a local repeater that would allow me to extend the range of the radio, then the fee might be worth it. I could find no info on google regarding any GMRS repeaters in Tulsa. There is a group that has installed one in the Los Angeles area thats free of charge to use provided that one has the FCC GMRS license.

I know its a fat chance that anyone is doing this in NE Oklahoma, but I figured that this would be the place to ask.

GMRS is really not intended as a 'general chat to the world' operation. The intended use is for 'in family' communications, now, short range. Fortunately, only ONE person in the family needs to be licensed.

The repeaters around on GMRS are usually put up for the use of a specific group, rather than 'general use', such as a local REACT group. The rules require you to have permission of a repeater owner to use their repeater, though many repeaters are happy to allow passers-by to use the system.

If what you want is something to chat with random folks, GMRS isn't it. That would be Ham, or if you're masochistic, old Class D CB.
