Spotted this at the southwest corner of Wilderness State Park along Lake Michigan. Anyone have any idea what this is used for?

Thank You
Zack S.

They're electronic type sirens. Not like the old rotary motor sirens from years ago. They also can do PA so the controller can send voice announcements. (Ex. "take cover", "lightning in the area", "evacuate", etc).

These new electronic sirens are not as effective as the old school ones in my area. I have one of these exactly one mile from my home and if I'm indoors watching TV with all the windows closed I usually don't hear it.

That's because they're outdoor warning systems. Everyone is supposed to have a weather radio inside.

Neither is your weather radio. The Weather Service calls it an "All Hazards" radio network. I can set mine to warn of avalanches, chemical spills, etc.

I used to live 10 miles from Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Maryland. Trust me, you could hear their good 'ol horn-type sirens very easily indoors!

Michigan's EAS plan does not currently include inserting any civil / other emergency alerts over NOAA. Currently, in MI, NOAA radios are only good for NOAA alerts. Broadcasters may (but are not required to) monitor and relay NOAA. When I was working in broadcasting, I relayed every NOAA alert as a community service.

I've heard they plan to include various civil alerts, but I don't have enough confidence in the area's NOAA network reliability to take it seriously.
