I have both of those scanners. In my neck of the woods they are about the same. The big difference is the BCT-8 has five banks and the pro-2051 has ten. I only use these two scanners in my bedroom and never mobile. One for trunk and the other for conventional.. Good scanners if you don't need tex-tags and tones. I like them both.........Ray

Hello: I am new here to this form, so i hope i am in the right form spot.

I just bought a new Uniden BCT8 Trunk Tracker 3. I have not seen or read much on this
one but there is lots on all the others that i have read.

I have tried for about 2 days now to figure out how to program it, I got it hook up to my computer and loaded in the software disk that came with it but it seem that it will only let me program 1 bank, It says to reg my software but it doesn't say where, it only says to go to Scanners.uniden.com to reg. I been there and can't find out where to reg. Oh when i said i could only program 1 bank, don't take it wrong. but what i mean is i am playing with one bank, but learning i hope. I live in Toronto Ontario, and still have to find all the right freqs for the Police Fire & Ambulance.

If someone could tell me if the cd that came with the BCT8 scanner is good or not so good,
or know of a better one i could buy please feel free to let me know about it, Anything at this time would help. I am looking forward to the first time i hear my scanner talk to me
after loading it myself, thats half of the fun figuring it out isn't it.
Anyway thank you for any input you may have in this matter.
And i hope to be a member for a long time.

PS what a great site you have here.
Thank you.

Hi Guys,

Thank you for the fast reply.
I downloaded the Scannersoft to give it a try, it looks good but i still have to figure out
where to get the numbers to put into each bank. Also, do you know if there is a program
that i can run to get the numbers for my area. I live in Toronto, Ontario. Canada.

And again thanks

PS i am just playing with this one i bought on the 24 of this month, BCT8
I am looking at another one also, I was told it was a better on then this one.
the model is a BCT15 Scanner. So it's my next one in a few months after i learn how
to program this one. I will figure it out sooner or later.
Have a nice day

BearTracker, use the database on this site. Scan Control has the ability to copy/paste data directly from it. I would also jump down to the Eastern Canada forum and see if you can get additional info. In addition, there are a few Yahoo based scanning groups for the Ontario area here (note that anything in blue is a link)

You might want to check out scanners before you actually buy them. Learn to use the wiki - there are extensive articles on lots of scanners as well as many of the more basic subjects, such as trunking. We also have a glossary to help you along with the terminology (that's linked on the bottom right).

Your right Mike, I have alot to learn here on scanners. but with your help and others i feel it will be a pleasant experence. I also went to the other sites you told me about,
(Canada & Yahoo) and there is lots of interesting stuff there, I get so mad at times because there is just so much to learn, and there is only so many hours in a day.

I don't know about anyone else on here but , there is so much information here i just
can't seem to pull myself away from all the reading, I haven't been to bed on time in days (or should i say nights) ha, ha.

Hey i did learn how to program my BCT8 last night, IT's not all good but i am picking up
a lot of my local Freqs. Now i have to learn to pick out the one's i don't want. I wish there was a program that was a editor or somethings like that.

Anyway again Thanks and have a nice day.

This is the first scanner I've had. I figured all I had to do was plug it in the wall and start listenning, guess I was wrong. What is the first thing I need to do to get it to pickup anything???

I'm in webster county, Mo.

Thanks

The obvious answer is to program it (note: anything that is in blue is a link)...if we examine the database entry for Webster County...

http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?ctid=1590

You will see that there are numerous frequencies listed here - all are what we call conventional in nature (that is, one set of users/frequency). The BCT8 should handle this without difficulty. You should read the owner's manual to learn how to program this radio; however, as you will see in this article....

http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/BCT8

in the supporting software section there are a few packages that support the BCT8. Scan Control has a copy/paste utility that would allow you to copy the frequencies and other information from the editor directly into its editor, where you could then edit the entries to fit your needs.

This, along with getting a good antenna, will get you off the ground. The ones Uniden supplies are fine to start, but it's almost certain at some point you will want to hear more. We have an antennas forum (along with a very nice scanner antenna wiki article) with tons of links and other information.

Thank you ka3jjz. I'm reading everything I can about scanning. I wasn't sure if I needed to program all of the frequencies ( Like the input or output or both). Do I need to install the software into the scanner?

Using software (installed on your PC) often makes programming easier, but as this is an older model, programming the radio by hand should be a snap. Be sure to read the owner's manual first. Only program the output freqs; the input freqs would be useful only if you were close to an incident.

As you are starting out, our Wiki has a glossary of many terms and definitions. It's under the 'special topics' section. Be sure to check that out first if you run into a term you don't understand. It's very far from complete, but it's a pretty fair start.

Thanks ka3jjz. I think I'm understanding it. Not sure though. Guess I'll just jump in and program the frequencies in it and see what happens...
