Has anyone heard any news or rumors about what Radio Shack might be working on to replace the Pro-96 and 2096 ?

It seems like GRE and Uniden and moving forward... but what will RS do ?

Do you think the days of RS specing out their scanners and having 3rd party manufactures will continue? Or will they just start directly selling scanners with the GRE and Uniden name on them ?

My PRO-96 is still working fine, but I am interested in gettin gthe latest and greatest. I see the newest 396 and 500, but what what, if anything, is on the horizon for RS ?

Is anyone else thinking of jumping ship and walking away from the RS name Badge and buying the newst offering from GRE or Uniden ?

Thanks for your comments.

It's hard to say but if the Pro-164 and Pro-137 are any indication RS will continue with custom designed rebranded scanners.

RS doesn't make scanners...GRE and Uniden have made their scanners. RS doesn't do enough scanner business to consider making their own and there aren't really any other manufacturers out there that would be able to compete with Uniden and GRE in the near future.

If radioshack doesn't make scanners then why does my pro-96 say radioshack on it.

I was just reinforcing the point and went on to tell you that RS will probably NOT do anything other than what they do now because they don't do enough scanner business to make it worth their while.

Dell does not make the case to a computer, or the hard drive or the parts in the case, but why is their name on it?
Same thing

Also one of the service managers from Radio Shack said he received an e-mail about a new scanner but I have not been able to get that info from him yet. I bought my Por 96 from him and he knows I was looking for a different scanner to replace the 96 so I think that is why he told me that. I will keep bugging him

Maybe GRE is going to put the PSR-500 electronics into a case with Radio Shack silk screened on it?

I would expect that to be the case.... At first it was thought that since GRE is selling their own scanners under their own brand now that they would no longer be an OEM for Radio Shack.. But the Pro-164 has sort of changed that belief (the psr-300 with a RS brand)... I see no reason why the PSR-500 wouldn't follow..

I remember seeing a picture on the psr500 prerelease thread of someone holding what looked like a psr500 but silver and its name was covered by a finger and the last letter looked like a k. Some of you might remember that

Pro-164

My local store received a PRO-164 on Wedensday. Its a 1000 channel tripple trunking PRO-97 capable of being flash upgraded and the only addition I could see from the list of features is 700MHz capability. And at $219.00, very disappointing. Without digital, the 700MHz band in a non-digital scanner is useless. I was expecting to see a PSR-300 with the Rat Shack name put on it. Buy the PSR-300, its a better deal.

PSR 500 case is already Radio Shack quality

Why bother putting the Radio Shack logo on the GRE PSR 500 case? It's already a cheap looking case with cheap RS style belt clip. The scanner already looks like a Radio Shack scanner...may as well just sell it under it's current GRE brand. At least Uniden got the belt clip right.

Sell more fones.... sell fewer scanners as scannists make their choices known by ordering scanners that fit their needs, work well and have some kind of user-friendly customer service.

Yes.... if I have to wait for my scanner to ship I am going to buy from a place that cares about my opinion and will fix things that are broken rather than tell me I have abused it or that it has never happened before (cheap BNCs for the antenna and the great rubber grip strip problems come to mind quickly.... not to mention upgrades that require me to be without my radio for weeks!) It now takes longer to drop ship an antenna from Rat Shack than it does to order from Universal or Grove, and the folks at Universal and Grove don't ask stupid questions about what is wrong... nor follow me around the store like I am prey (because I look "different")....
