One nice feature for MARCS that the PSR-800 has is the ability to show Site IDs on which site is being received.
That is one feature I wish we had on the PSR-500.

This radio also seems to be more responsive than the 500 on showing Radio IDs .
I see more more Radio IDs pop up than I do on my 500.

Now this radio has a bit of a lag when importing systems from the card. The bigger the system the more time consuming it is.
It took 88 minutes to load then entire MARCS system into a Scan List.

Alpha Tag search function on PSR-800

I have been trying to figure out how to search for alpha tags (agency frequency identifiers such as SWAT) on my PSR-800. Any suggestions would be appreciated! I have downloaded and printed out the manual, but I can't seem to find the right steps.

......................................................................how to search for alpha tags (agency frequency identifiers such as SWAT) on my PSR-800. .................................................................

Question probably needs fleshing out? Do you want to search the radio contained database for instances of "SWAT" using only the radio? Do you want to search your scan lists for instances of "SWAT" using only the radio? I can't think of any way to do either.

I believe the alpha tags are user editable. What if you named a certain category of channels (in your ScanLists) "HotDogs" (for instance). Using only the radio, I would guess you would have to step through each channel for a visual inspection of the alpha tag.

Now, away from the radio, using software (EZSCan, EXCEL, etc.) standard, or even complex searches, of any data group would appear to be trivial.

Now, if you want to search the "air around you" for active radio channels that RR, in their infinite wisdom, have assigned the alpha tag "SWAT" to, you probably need an HP-1(E) scanner, lol.

And, if you want to search the "air around you" for active radio channels that RR does not list (or know about), that YOU would assign the alpha tag "SWAT" to, a real expert will have to assist you.

From the radio you can browse the objects you have loaded into memory by object, but there is no alpha tag search on the 800.
You can browse the library (card) by country>state>county>agency, but not by alpha tag.

The easiest way to search, is to use the EZScan software copy from scanner and then search via alpha tags.

Thanks for the info Mark, how is the 800 on Civ & Mil air? The 500 really sucks on Vhf air, overloads pretty bad.

Mike

Geez, I apologize for not answering this back when. I does pretty well on
the civilian and military aero bands, my only gripe is the audio is a bit low in AM mode.

The AM audio on the 500 is awful, I would like to see GRE refresh the 500 improve the audio and AM sensitivity and add the improvements from the 800.

Thanks

I agree. I find the AM audio on the GRE built Pro-97 is pretty good, not sure why they can't get it right in the 500 and 800.

Anybody tried the GRE-800 yet on MARCS yet?

Mike

I'm also using the PSR-800 here to monitor 10 MARCS sites. Audio is beautiful, and the decoding is nearly flawless. I actually think it may be handling weak signal 800 mhz P25 audio better than the PSR-500/600 and Pro-197/106, if that's possible.

I haven't used it for scanning VHF or UHF. I'm using it solely to monitor MARCS and the 800 Mhz AEP EDACS system and very happy with the performance.

If you take the card out of the radio, put it in an adapter, and plug it into the memory card slot on your computer, it's MUCH faster on an update.

I wasn't talking about an update, that takes very little time just using the USB connection.
I stated when pulling up (i.e. loading) a system the size of MARCS into a Scanlist from within the radio (card) itself takes a long time depending on the size of the system. It took over 8 hours to load the Indiana SAFE-T system from within the radio. Granted I have an early production model so that may have something to do with the process.

Has anyone tried to monitor the new MARCS Project 25 Motorola X2-TDMA system in the Cleveland area?

I can't remember if anyone has reported TDMA activity yet on the Project 25 system, but I don't think so. There is a thread open about it [listed below]. Incidentally, despite the original thread name of "Ohio MARCS - Cuyahoga Co Project", it's actually about the Project 25 system in general. And, one of the sites active is also in Franklin Co.

http://forums.radioreference.com/oh...um/175238-ohio-marcs-cuyahoga-co-project.html

You might want to read through that thread for more info.

Use a wildcard talkgroup object to scan in open mode. The wildcard tells the scanner to let you hear any unprogrammed talkgroups that may exist on the current system/site being monitored.
