• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

No more Bluetooth, going to hard core true OTAP, are they adding full on OTAR too? And no real abilities to do much unless your setup allows the radios to talk directly to Motorola On Line... Hmmm So that will end a lot of folks trying to use MotoTRBO radios as scanning toys lol. You want the radios to keep functioning properly, you got to update regularly like an cell phone... I so forsee this getting lets say interesting over the next year.

Probably not going to happen for a while. Best bet is to NOT upgrade to Trbo 2 and you can't go backwards once written with Trbo 2.0, any attempt to backtrack will tool proof the radio.

No Bluetooth Programming? For me thats the best thing about mototrbo over Hytera! Sounds like a backwards step in many areas, thanks all for the heads up.

So.... on "legacy" Mototrbo systems, that are working just fine (and have been for years) why would one perform this "update"?

No remote repeater programming? Man, after I wasted all that time patiently waiting for Motorola to include IP repeater programming as a standard feature they just drop it.

AND you had to buy the IP programming enhancement which is now useless.

Hmmm seeing a lot of doom and gloom end of times talks and judging by the fact that I have gotten a couple of calls from customers who saw this thread and got worried about if they would be affected, I figured I would give my 2 cents.

-CPS2.0 can be stored on the same computer as CPS 1.0 and CPS 2.0 does not need to phone home, CPS2.0 is fully functional as a standalone application. CPS2.0 also makes it very easy to clone from a legacy codeplug and I am actually starting to really like CPS2.0 and the additions they have made to it (although the overall UI is a bit clunky).

-Any radio purchased from around mid-2018 (whenever the service essentials program started) forward already comes with a 5-year subscription so if you have a relatively new fleet of radios and plan on getting more, I recommend upgrading to the latest 2.10 firmware as will be free and will allow you to program everything with one flavor of CPS as new radios will soon start shipping with 2.10 which will require CPS2.0 to program.

-If you bought your mototrbo radio before mid-2018 there is no need to pay for a 5 year subscription unless you have a large fleet of "e" series radios that you would like to program via RM through Wi-Fi (a very convenient tool btw as I was just able to program 150 radios at a clients location in under 30 min) as the 5 year subscription not only gets you new firmware, it also comes with a very nice deal on the radio's Wi-Fi EID license.

-If you do not upgrade the firmware, there is no need to worry, your radio will not explode nor will it cease to function.

-If you choose to not renew your 5-year subscription even if your radio has new firmware, your radio will not explode nor will it cease to function. It will simply not accept any further firmware upgrades after the 5-year timeline is up unless you pay Motorola for another 5 years. The radio can still be reprogrammed and it will still function like normal.

Please know, I am still experimenting with all this new 2.10 FW and CPS2.0 so my outlook may change, however, from what I have seen, it seems like the only thing that is changing is that if you bought your radios pre mid-2018 you would need to get an optional 5 year subscription in order to get new firmware, but, your radio will not explode nor will it cease to function if you choose not to.

Thank You Aaron_B for clarifying this. ;-)
Looks like 2.0 won't mark the end of Mototrbo!

I'm not wanting to jump into CPS 2.0 at this point, but am trying to get more current... I was on CPS 15 and Firmware R02.08.01.0000

When I attempt to install the firmware file after upgrading to CPS 16 (which is 2.9 dated 6-14-18), the installer says "The InsallShield(R) Wizard will install MOTOTRBO 2.0 R0209000001_140013 Portable Update Packages..."

The 2.0 is making me pause. Do I have the wrong 2.9?

No. You are getting hung up in the difference between CPS 16.0 and CPS 2.0. CPS 2.0 compliments R2.10 (which is the latest and greatest and likely not the CPS/firmware desired). MOTOTRBO 2.0 means it is for second generation radios (XPR5000/7000, XPR2000/3000, etc) but is firmware release R2.09. That's what you are looking for.

@DiGiTaLD..

You should look carefully at what you have loaded on your system and what file extensions map to what.. There is NO SUPPORT in CPS 2.0 for Legacy radios AKA: 4000 and 6000 series, and there is no support for 2nd Generation running code older than 2.4. Since you can have CPS 1.n and CPS 2.0 on the same system I expect your XPR 6550's were written with an older install.

Here is what I did: I opened a .ctb codeplug created in CPS 1x with CPS 2.0. The .ctb file extension still opens on my system with CPS 1x by default. I had to run CPS 2 and then I opened the .ctb codeplug from within CPS 2.

I then made changes to the .ctb codeplug and saved it in CPS 2's .ctb2 format. After that, I wrote it back to the radio (an XPR 6550) using CPS 2.0. CPS 1x was not running at all when I did this. I have done three XPR 6550s this way, and they all accepted the programming just fine and are currently in service, working properly, at this very moment.

So if it's not supposed to work, it worked pretty well.

BTW, this is a legal copy obtained directly from my MOL subscription. No hacks, all original equipment as provided by the manufacturer.

I should also mention that if you are cloning multiple radios using CPS, the radio identity feature in CPS 2 is really convenient. On CPS 1x, you had to clone the radio, read back the codeplug, edit the radio's identity if you so desired, and then write back again. CPS 2 has streamlined the same process by providing a radio identity window at the time of cloning, when you can edit just a radio's ID and alias. Very cool.

My only big gripe with CPS 2 is that it is S-L-O-W.

What was the firmware version of your Gen1 radio? I'm guessing it was current. That probably won't work with a 1.9 version radio.

The 6550s I am working on with CPS 2.0 are running R01.12.17 firmware and using codeplug 13.02.03. I'm actually cloning a bunch of them as I type this, and its working nicely.

That is the current version as you know. This won't work with earlier versions. There is no benefit to using Trbo 2.0 until forced to be new radios from the factory. No benefit at all for Gen 1 radios.

I just installed 2.0 and opened an existing code plug created with 16.0. I'm not a fan but maybe I am missing some settings.

Can you open two code plugs and cut and paste between them like 16.0?

Yes, you can actually now copy and paste from an overhead level essentially letting you clone between different model radios. I just cloned a massive legacy XPR7550 codeplug with mismatching EID's into a XPR7550e without any issues and with only 3 clicks!!! The only issues I have with CPS 2.0 now is just the laggy UI, but, overall it definitely makes the cloning process easier.

I am a bit confused here...so new TRBO 2.0 firmware upgrades will be paid, so basically we are traveling back to 1990's paid f/w updates?
