• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey RR,

Anyone know if you can restore a codeplug that was saved? My dodo bird friend went to go edit and work off the ORIGINAL saved codeplug, and clicked saved on it and wrote the new data over the old. I checked “restore previous versions” but the folder is empty.

Thanks in advance, and word to the wise TAKE YOUR RADIO TO A SHOP!

Nah, not unless you happen to have the file saved somewhere that allows file rollback, like Dropbox. There is no "restore" functionality in APX CPS or for APX codeplugs in general. If the radio hasn't yet been written, you could read it to restore the previous programming.

What was so important in the saved codeplug that can't be reverted manually by having your friend undo whatever he did?

I figured that would be the case. I had some important frequencies in there with specific PL codes he “went over” and I lost em. I’ll just have to call the tech tomorrow... thankfully it’s all conventional stuff. Thanks again, GTR.

The ASTRO 25 CPS used to create a .cpglog file after each codeplug save, which documented the changes. I suppose the APX CPS has gotten a bit too complex for the same logging feature, as it was never part of it.

I enjoyed the Astro 25 CPS. It definitely seemed more user friendly. I won’t say that the APX CPS isn’t user friendly, but it’s definitely more tedious and you have to pay close attention. Maybe I’m just old school but I feel like the APX CPS is all over the place. I liked the “barebones” ASTRO 25 CPS.

I feel the opposite, the APX CPS is easier to use once you get used to it. Oh and the fact that it carries the aliases forward through different sections is a huge advantage. I know exactly which conventional or trunked system I'm assigning to a personality, I know exactly which scan list I'm assigning to a personality, and I know exactly which conventional frequency or trunked talkgroup I'm assigning to a zone channel. No guessing based on the personality or scan list numbers like in ASTRO 25 CPS, which is awful. Yes, you wind up having to type a bit more in APX CPS to create those aliases, but they ultimately save a ton of time not having to flip back and forth to see which number scan list you want to assign. ASTRO 25 CPS seems very primitive in comparison after working with APX CPS for so long.
