Hey guys,

I've been scanning for awhile, and I've been wondering some things about scanning in Arapahoe County... Are there certain TGs that can be only heard on the Arapahoe Admin or Chevron CCs, respectively?

I have two radioshack pro-106s and I tried listening to Littleton PD, with one scanner on each CC... I could hear it out of the Admin site but not the Chevron site. What gives for this, as it seems like Littleton is the only one that is wierd...!?* When I'm out of range, could a Douglas site possibly carry Arapahoe dispatch?

Any help is appreciated, this is a great resource!

I hear Littleton PD 24/7 off of Chevron. In fact, it's the only site I monitor Arapahoe County TG's with while at home. When you state your out of range, where exactly are you. You should try to monitor sites near your current location.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I'm at Arapahoe & University... I have some odd issues with getting Chevron at my house, but everywhere else it's great. That's probably what my problem was.

That's odd. I logged towers and Littleton PD shows up regularly (ie every time I logged) on Arapahoe Admin, Chevron, Riley and Lookout. It has a pretty wide footprint for a relatively small (geographically) department.

I use lookout up this way and hear them fine its south metro FD I cant seem to get very well

South Metro is trickier. I saw them consistently on Littleton (Arapahoe Admin), Chevron, Riley, Smoky Hill but that's for dispatch and since they go to other channels to respond they don't have as big a footprint. Just like me and Weld County FD, Poudre FD and Loveland FD and the Elbert County FD - I can always hear the dispatches but getting the ops channel is hit and miss (usually miss!) depending on who is responding.

When I attempted to monitor the IH25 corridor from NM to Wyoming, I was amazed at the saturation of trunking and P25. I took me 18 hours to program since I was unfamiliar with the area. I had the most difficulty hearing the area close to Denver, including the cities mentioned in this thread.

Thanks for your input... so i guess to a rookie like me this begs the question: what defines how big a TGs footprint is?

This does. RadioReference.com - Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference Database If you have access to that tower you can see you have a huge footprint.

That shows the footprint a tower has (how large an area it covers). What I consider the footprint of a talkgroup is how many towers they can be heard on. Sometimes this varies such as when you'll hear a Durango PD unit on Lookout if they're traveling. There are however towers that you'll regularly hear a talkgroup on because units in the field affiliate with this tower. If an agency has 1 unit it will have a very small number of towers it affiliates with. If it has a lot of units they might affiliate with a lot of different towers. A good example of an agency that affiliates with a lot of towers (has a big footprint) is Arapahoe SO. I have them logged full-time on Littleton, Chevron, Lookout, Squaw, Glendale, Riley and Smoky Hill. I would guess they would be full-time on Zap and Deer Trail too but I can't hear these towers. On the other hand Glendale PD will be full-time on Glendale site and I've heard them pop up on Chevron and Riley but not at all times. They cover a very small area so chances are all units will affiliate with one site while a large geographical area (Arapahoe SO, Jefferson SO, etc) will be on a lot of towers. Hope that helps when I talk about the footprint of a TG.

Huh! that's really interesting. I'm living down in Durango for school, interesting to know I might be able to hear a tiny bit in Denver if I listen to lookout. So it really depends on where the PD's radios are in terms of what towers carry what signals?

Very rare to hear that. I've never personally heard something like that but if they travel and leave their radio on then their active talkgroup will be heard on whatever tower they affiliate with. As Jimmnn said once our best friend (as scannists) is the off-duty officer who leaves his/her radio on and lives a long ways from the district so we can hear the TG a long way away!
