• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I know I got flack on using this radio, but I upgraded to a Wouxom 1000 plus. But coming back to say that the Baofeng is being used to scan my county now. It is excellent on anolog I have a bunch of scanners here and have a hard time hearing Pickens county, closer to Greenville witch is 800 simulcast, but Pickens is simple analog. This radio picks up Pickens analog great. Just saying for people like me who still have analog only cheap way to listen than any of the scanners I have.

Nothing wrong with Baofeng. I checked into two nets tonight, each more than 10 miles from my QTH, full quieting with my TP-8 Plus. I use it for APRS beaconing with APRSdroid. Ignore the haters, forgive them for they no not what they speak.

I see a lot of negative posts on this site regarding Baofeng radios. I'm as fed up with low quality foreign garbage as the next person, but could not pass up a UV-82 with a drop in charger for $20. It performs spectacularly in dual vfo mode monitoring county and city fire dispatch on VHF while the SDS is doing other things. I also refuse to take a $600 SDS outside with me while working on the tractors and the pollen is flowing like a river. Never used it to transmit, so I cannot comment on the frequency spray they are purported to have. I would not have paid full price for the radio, but placed in a go bag or as a backup it serves a purpose.

Not type this or that approved, just use it in the right manner. As Kevin said the the FCC is not going through the area looking for non approved radios.

They are great receivers, it is easy to program them not to transmit on public safety or others. As others have confirmed, if you live in a analog area I feel the receive is better than my scanners.
