Is there a BC-996T book for dummies???
I don't understand this new file format that Uniden is using and I can't get to follow Marin County and what is up with unidens database it dosen't show alot of systems that have been around for over five years and nothing of the San Francisco Ca. Systems.
As soon as the boss says I can put my PAID membership on his card maybe some of the import features will work for me.

FYI: I'm using TrunkStar Pro Eilite for software ( why you may ask, I have two other programs from S.I.) and seams to work until NOW

I am not sure about CA but RR has a good database for CT towns. It is well worth the $$. I got my files for the 996 and the PRO-96.

George, keep this wiki article handy - there's a fair amount of good information here...

http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/BCD996T

First thing to do is to get rid of thoughts of 'banks' - it's now 'groups' and 'systems'. Under the Related Pages section, read the 'Scanner Programming: Man-Machine Interface' article by our own UPMan. This should get you started thinking in the new terminology

Next, go to this site:
http://marksscanners.bravehost.com/

There are 2 'Easier to Read' manuals; either of which would be worth reading - one for the BR330/BCD396 (the 396 is the 996's little brother) or the BCT15 (the analog only cousin to the 996).

Finally when you do get your subscription, get a copy of ARC996 (that link is on the Wiki article I mentioned above). That software will allow you to connect to the RRDB and download data directly. The other way to go is to get on the California forum and see if someone has file(s) in ARC996 (or, if you get this software, Uniden's Advanced System Director, or UASD) format. When you ask for a file, it's important to specify the software you are using. If memory serves ARC996 can read UASD files but not the other way around.

Yes, ignore any of the Uniden db data - it tends to be rather dated stuff (certainly is for my home in Maryland). Stick with the RRDB and/or files sent to you from local users (best) and you should be good to go 73s Mike

Now that is the best $30.00 I have spent on these radios yet....
and as far as ARC996T, Gombert makes an OK product but I need more then it can do and I need to work with multiple radios and I really do not like the idea that I have to buy a program for each radio, so I went ahead and bought TrunkStar Pro Elite, yea I know it’s not cheap ($130.00) but I got the company to pay for it and it will support all of the radios from Uniden with this new file format system (BC-396 BC330 and others)
I have also been reading a lot of complaints about ARC 996 on the Yahoo Group (which in it self does not mean anything, But???)
Anyway that is my story,

George,
There are a number of Uniden format (*.usd) files for your area, including one for Marin County, in the 396's Yahoo group. Don't know if you've tried that file or not. It will load into 996, and work. If you have not already, download & install Uniden's UASD programming (be sure & select the option with the software key).

Then download any file you want to look at. saving it to the database folder for the Uniden 996 software. From there, you can add it to a configuration & load that single file, or any combination, to the 996.

I presume that once it's in the scanner, you can then save it back down to the pc into Trunk Star for any additional manipulation. (I haven't used Trunk Star.)
