Thanks for these responses. I will look into all of these. The radio is still in transit having been purchased on line. My 40-year old unit is still working but the LCD screen has decided to give up. My brother is actually still listening to a unit that is even older... a tabletop model... one of the first from Bearcat.
Worth noting on the following info offered in this thread and at Radio Reference...
Supporting Software and Driver
Driver and Install Instructions for BC75XLT (Uniden Support) (***)
ARC75
Uniden BC75XLT
*** This link is dead and no longer supported by Uniden. The domain is for sale and maybe someone at Radio Reference can delete it from your pages.
The remining links work and had usable info and downloads.
I'd also note that Uniden Support, who I have been in touch with via Email sent the same link but were not aware that it was dead and off line.
I queried them if their software would work with Windows 10, since the documentation (boilerplate) they sent out referenced Windows XP and Windows 7. However the response to that question said they were sorry it did not work for me and sent manual programming instructions. It appears that their customer support system is being handled by a "call center" and not people with actual knowledge on answering specific questions. This is disheartening since I love their product line and have recommended it for many years to others. When you get responses like that, you don't get a good feeling about purchasing newer and advanced products from a company.
Their instructions stated you have to manually move a driver into a specified folder which will likely need administrative permissions, so there is no formal MSI installer. The instructions failed to note that as well as note that you may need to restart (cold start) the system in order for the new file to be properly indexed. And again... these were instructions for Win-XP and Win7. Nothing for OS after that. It seems Uniden is not maintaining this info or even noting that it may or may not work on later operating systems.
So if you are fortunate enough to locate their customer support email (it's buried real good), don't expect specific technical questions to get answered. That has been my experience so far. I'm still in a dialogue but with less hope. That was why I came here for people who actually know that they are talking about from experience.
I appreciate the heads up on alternatives. Those may, in the end, be the choice.
While the unit I ordered is dated, it will serve my needs. Anything on the 800 band that I might want to listen-to is already encrypted, or hopping between random frequencies the agency has.
Thanks again.
