My 796 just quits receiving EDACS. It has been back to the Uniden hospital twice and works when returned. They say there is nothing wrong and all they did was an "alignment". Well, it has quit again. Before I get it "aligned" again, I thought I would ask if anyone else has experienced this? There are no lockouts, I have another handheld working fine and Motorola stuff is perfect.

Welcome to the forum.

Please provide us with the following:
1. your EDACS system location (county/city).
2. your LCN (frequency/channel order) in the EDACS bank.
3. your software if using.

Thanks for the reply. Here is the requested information:

1) EDACS system is in Montgomery County, Woodlands, Texas. I am just 5 miles south in Harris county north of Houston.

2) BANK,3,100
866.32500,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,1
866.35000,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
866.77500,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
866.82500,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
867.10000,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
867.25000,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
867.30000,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
867.32500,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
867.77500,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
867.80000,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
867.85000,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
868.27500,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
868.35000,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
868.68750,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0
868.83750,"Montgomery Count",On,,2sec,,,FM,12.5K,,,0

Note: The sequential order above is something I did today. The 796 was programmed exactly as listed in the RR database and was working then quit.

3) Software is "BC296D/BC796D SS"

Set to "EDACS WIDE" and Trunk is "ON"

What is it doing when it quits? Does EDACS reception drop out altogether, or does it just quit trunking? Are you getting control channel noise? Are you getting the EDACS beeps?

I have a 796 and, unlike my 396, it has been perfect on EDACS. Yours is a very unusual problem and have never read about it before. That is going to be a tough one to solve.

Have you had this problem since it was new, or did it just pop up recently?

The best way to describe the failure is it just does not do anything. If you enable the bank (3 in this case) it just sits there like you need to resume or scan.

Screen:

ID SCAN
868.9600 NFM (Not one of the EDACS Freqs)
List --3-------

The strange thing is I pick up 3 or 4 of the Motorola trunking transmissions programmed into bank 1 but otherwise the bank is dead. I can set my handheld 396Pro beside the 796 on the same EDACS bank and it chatters away. The 396 is programmed with the ARC396Pro software on another system.

Oh, the last question about when this showed up. It has been intermitten on (now) three occassions since I received the unit. I believe it worked for about 1 year before the first failure.

If the database page for Montgomery County is correct your LCN is incorrect and since none of the voice channels are in the correct location there will never be any voice traffic.

This is a line up of comparisons:
Code:
Your LCN	DB LCN
866.3250*	866.3250*
866.3500	866.7750
866.7750	867.2500
866.8250	867.7750
867.1000	868.2750*
867.2500	868.8375
867.3000	866.3500
867.3250	866.8250
867.7750	867.1000
867.8000	867.3250
867.8500	867.8000
868.2750*	868.3500
868.3500	868.6875
868.6875	867.3000
868.8375	867.8500
Try the lineup on the right.

Thanks. That is the freq load I had working but just quit. I only tried the sequential load today. This is wierd and I appreciate your efforts. Have a great (remaining) weekend.

You didn't answer GTO's question regarding control channel noise. Can you hear it?

Also, you posted this info regarding the display.
ID SCAN
868.9600 NFM (Not one of the EDACS Freqs)
List --3-------

Do you mean 868.9600 is on the display or did you just use the freq number as example? Also, a List --3------- is scanning scan list #3 only, do you have ID's programmed in that list?

Sorry, no control noise, completely quite. 868.9600 is actually on the display and yes, I have a very long list of ID's for the Montgomery EDACS on bank 3. I can turn on bank 1 with Motorola Harris and this bank works fine.

TalkGroup lists are different than channel banks. Your EDACS system is in Bank 3. Bank 3 can have up to 10 Talk Group Lists assigned to it. According to your display only list 3 is active. Check out the owners manual for your 796. Here is the section on page 24 that explains how to turn talk group lists on and off:

Selecting Talkgroup Lists to Scan

When the scanner is in the ID Scan mode, you can select which ID lists you want the
BC796D to scan. First, if you are scanning a Motorola or EDACS system, ensure that you
are in the Scan List mode. Press RVRS until the scanner displays “List” at the left side of
line 3 in the display when it has not stopped on a talkgroup or on the left side of line 4 if it
has stopped on a talkgroup. Then, press the number corresponding to the ID list you want to turn on or off.

But if you are not receiving the control channel data there is something else going on.

Hope this helps,

Well, I’m more than a little embarrassed. I scan all ID’s on the Montgomery County EDACS site and I must have depressed the “trunk” key and turned “Ready to ID Search” to “Ready to ID Scan”. Thanks to everyone for a very helpful set of responses.

Do not be embarrassed. You are probably not the first one to do that.
