you shouldn't charge the batteries in the scanner, go to RS and get the 23-1305 30 minute charger for $30 it even comes with 4 2300Mah AA's and 4AAA 850Mah for something else (I use the AAA in my remotes) .
Cheging the batteries in the scanner can, and will damage the scanner. There are a couple threads about it if do a search. The above charger can charge up to 3000Mah batteries.

Will 2650 MAH Nimh Batteries work in the BCD396T charger?

Yes, you can. I know lots of people who only charge batteries (varying mAh) in the scanner and have no problems. There is a possibility the batteries could overheat and damage the scanner. Even though the chance of that isn't great, a lot of people will use an external charger just to be safe and not damage the scanner.

I use 2650 MaH batteries, but I do charge them in an external charger. I have used the internal charger, but external chargers are much faster. I just have two sets and rotate them.

Not as easy as you think to charge the batteries out of the radio...considering you have to charge 2 batteries at a time...

And yes, I know...charge six batteries...

I have a LaCross BC-900 charger that will charge batteries, 1, 2, 3, or 4 at a time. Also, I have heard good things about the MAHA chargers, for example:

I bought a cheap charger at a discount place that will charge 1,2, 3, or all 4 AA or AAA batteries. It works really well. It was only $10.00 and I wish I had bought two.

Trivially easy as long as you don't have a cheap-a** charger. Neither of my Maha chargers have that bug - every cell is on an independent circuit. And even the C-9000 with 12VDC/120VAC compatibility and all its displays and charge, refresh and analyze modes is less than $60. A bargain for someone like me who uses 1-3 battery sets per day.

I have two energizer chargers that will do 1,2,3 or 4. You just have to watch which charger you buy.
