BCD396xt help

I have a uniden 396xt, the little kids helped fix it, and now it shows its scanning,but there is no sound. Is there a mute i'm not seeing. Also is there a place to see diections without using the CD disk that came with it. I think this scanner is more difficult to program than my PRO-96. Any help would be appreciated.

What was wrong with the scanner before that "the little kids" helped fix?

now it shows its scanning,but there is no sound.

Does the scanner stop on any channels or does it just endlessly scan without picking anything up?

Is there a mute i'm not seeing.

There is no "mute" button/setting on the scanner, but the volume control on the 396XT is a bit of a pain to use. You have to press the selector knob down first to switch it to 'volume mode' and then turn it left or right to adjust the volume. (press the function button first, then press the selector knob down, then turn left or right to adjust squelch).

Also is there a place to see diections without using the CD disk that came with it.

The easier to read manual is a great resource. You can also copy the CD manual onto your PC so you don't need to find it every time you need to reference something. You can also order a printed manual from scannermaster.com if you prefer it on paper.

I think this scanner is more difficult to program than my PRO-96.

Uniden DMA scanners like the BCD396XT take some adjustment from traditional bank/channel scanners to learn how program, but it gets easy once you learn the system and menu hierarchies. DMA is very flexible and easy to use but you need to plan and set up the systems, sites, groups, channels, and quick keys properly to get the most out of it.

These scanners are great devices, but tend to be more complex to a user not used to DMA. Programming software is pretty much a necessity with all modern high-end scanners (the 396XT is certainly no exception). Freescan is a great (and free) program that can handle everything you need to do.

If you post the area you want to listen to then you might be able to find a 396XT/996XT owner in your area that would be willing to send you a copy of their scanner profile (you could load it onto your scanner for free using freescan) This would be a good start for you, as most of what you want to listen to may already be set up for you, just customize it to meet your needs.
