HOW are you trying to update the firmware? Have you tried to update it before and were you successful? Does you scanner work or did it ever work with other software using the front connector?

How are you trying to update the firmware?
I was told that is had to be done through the front USB. I'm using a null cable connected to the rear GPS connection for program

Yes I'm using ProScan, I can program from the GPS connection, I was hoping that I might be able to buy a hex-code from Uniden? I was just checking to see if anyone else found a work around, I didn't want to send my scanner in for repair, at this time. I also know that this is a common problem my the 996P2.

By the way thank you for you reply

Here is the Uniden firmware updater you need to do the job. Save the file to your computer and extract. Install the extracted file. Connect your scanner through the front port, run the updater, select the scanner model, and follow instructions. Requires internet connection.

He could be having a problem with the drivers for the port. If that is the case, here are the drivers:

If you are having problems installing the drivers, see the following general instructions (some steps might differ slightly, depending on your specific operating system).

  1. Download and unzip the above driver.
  2. Plug in the scanner using a USB cable.
  3. Right click on the Windows Launch icon (bottom left corner) and select "Device Manager."
  4. The device shows up with a yellow triangle.
  5. Right click on device and select "Update Driver Software."
  6. Select "Browse My Computer for Driver Software."
  7. Navigate to the folder where you have unzipped the above driver.
The driver installed and is assigned as: Uniden Serial Port (COMx)
(x) will be replaced with the actual port number.

I want to again thank you all for your advise.. I have installed the driver before with no problems, but will try again. Awhile back my scanner stopped working while using the front USB port, so I decided to buy a null-cable and use the rear GPS 15 pin connector. This set-up works fine for downloading my system's to the scanner, and recording to my computer. I was hoping that there was a work-around to be able to install the later's firmware, without needing to use the front USB port. As stated above I didn't want to have to send my scanner in for repair at this time.

When I first got my 999P2, I used the rear 9 pin connector for programming because the front port did not work until I found that I had to install the drivers. Good luck! I'm hoping it's just a driver problem. Did you try a different cable? That could be bad. Let us know how you made out.

Thanks for the reply sir, I don't even get that far, when I turn my scanner on I get a device error. I'm going to order a new cable. I checked a few places yesterday and both were out. Also I'm a little confused, some post say you can use a regular mini-1 cable, others say you need the one with the build in chip.

The BCD996P2 does not use the Uniden USB-1 cable with the built in chip.

Here's the error that I keep getting Device Descriptor Request Failed this appears the minute I turn my scanner on. I did remove the driver and installed the Uniden driver.
