Hello. I have one question seeing if anyone on here can answer for me.

I have a BCD996P2 scanner and I don’t have the NXDN Upgrade on it, so just seeing if anyone on here can tell me how I would go and do that, like on the scanner what info I need from my scanner and if I need to call someone and what number that would be. Never did this before. The friend I got this scanner from a long time ago, never activated the NXDN only DMR, since NXDN wasn’t used that much then.

So if anyone can let me know, that would be appreciated, thanks

Ok, I was hoping someone could maybe just tell me to make it easier, instead of going through all those posts to find it.

So if anyone on here can tell me that would be appreciated and easier.

Thanks

First, be sure you have the latest firmware available in your scanner.

From the scanner, you will need the serial number from the tag on the back of the scanner and you will need the electronic serial number and the checksum available through the scanners menu system.

Then go to my.uniden.com to register your scanner and then purchase the upgrade. Be sure to note when they are asking you for the serial number or the electronic serial number with the checksum.

you will receive a digital key that you enter through the scanner menu system to activate NXDN.

Ok. I have never updated the firmware in my scanner and don’t plan to, everything works just fine with the firmware that is on it. So do I really need to upgrade the firmware, if I don’t have to then I will stick with what I am using.

Ok I see the serial number but don’t see the electronic serial number (all I see under menu, settings, see scanner info & firmware version for that is: M-Ver=1 if that is the electronic serial number.

And as for checksum I see: SUM=147. If that is what I need.

And when I go to the website I will need a credit card after or how do you pay for it.

Then I will receive the NXDN digital key through my email and then I just go to menu, settings, Upgrade and enter it there and then I will be all set to monitor NXDN on my scanner

Ok I see the serial number but don’t see the electronic serial number (all I see under menu, settings, see scanner info & firmware version for that is: M-Ver=1 if that is the electronic serial number.

The 14 digit number after SN is the electronic serial number (ESN) It's slightly different from the serial number on the tag on the back of the scanner (SN).

SUM is the checksum.

The current firmware version for the BCD996P2 is version 1.10.02... the NXDN (and other upgrades) are contained in the firmware, and the digital key activates it. Depending on how old your scanner is, NXDN may not be in your scanner, and a key won't activate it if it's not there.

Firmware instructions are here:

You will need a credit card for the upgrade purchase. You will receive the key immediately.

You can verify if NXDN is available for your scanner as an upgrade with your current firmware by pressing, "MENU" then select "Settings" then select "Upgrade". This will show what upgrades are currently available for your scanner.

My scanner shows "ProVoice", "DMR/MotoTRBO", and "NXDN".

Ok I see that electronic serial number now you are talking about.

And as for firmware. Do I need to update the firmware before I can get the NXDN Upgrade. Because I don’t want to mess anything up on it by upgrading the firmware if I don’t really need it.

I don’t know how old this scanner is, all I know is I have had it for quite a few years now. So how do I tell if my scanner will do NXDN and it can be activated before I look into getting it.

And it will be sent to my scanner the key for me to enter or where is it sent to.

Ok well if this helps any my firmware version like I said I never updated it since I got it from my friend quite a few years ago. And all that it shows on it under Upgrade is: ProVoice & DMR/MotoTRBO

So if it’s not showing does that mean I can’t upgrade and get NXDN or is there a way to get it or am I out of luck and this scanner will only do what posted above.

Let me know

Thanks

Check post #7 above to see if your has firmware is new enough to activate NXDN.

If you don't see NXDN there you MUST upgrade the firmware to get the NXDN capability into the scanner to be able to activate it with the digital key... there is no other way. It really isn't that difficult if you carefully follow the directions.

Also, check the link for the firmware page I gave you in post #6 above. Read the history for the firmware updates, especially #1....

Fixed an issue where the new radio hardware could not decode digital communications in the frequency range of 171.2250 – 173.9875MHz.

Always a good idea to keep up with the latest firmware, or at least check the update history to see if anything has been fixed or added.

As mentioned in my earlier post, you will be given a digital key at the time you purchase it, (and also by email) that you enter through the upgrade section in the scanner's menu system.

Ok so I looked at the firmware page you sent me in post #6 and this is the current one I see:

Version 1.10.02 Released 7/13/22

So this would be the one I need to install since it’s the latest one and this should give me the option to upgrade to NXDN and get it to show up under “Upgrade”.

And doing this firmware update shouldn’t do anything to my scanner like mess it up in any way or stop things from working on it, where everything is working just fine. Since this is my only BCD996P2 and don’t want anything to mess up and don’t plan on getting another. Just mentioning this because I never did anything like this before like update firmware or upgrade anything on it.

Correct... as I mentioned in my post above. That will make the NXDN upgrade available in your scanner.

Just follow the directions on the first line of the page for the firmware updates, the scanner will do the rest. As long as you follow those directions, you won't have any problem. Many, many others have upgraded the BCD996P2 firmware with no problems at all, it's a very simple procedure as long as you read and follow the instructions.

As always... with any upgrades to any electronic devices, it's best to back up your current programming as standard procedure.

Ok will follow those directions and hopefully don’t run into any problems.

And yah I have my files saved for my BCD996P2 for each bank.

So I am guessing just say I ran into a issue with the firmware update/upgrade, there is no way to go back to the way it was or to undo it to put my scanner the way it was before I did the firmware update/upgrade.

The BC_VUP updater will only allow updating/changing to the latest firmware available.

Just be absolutely certain your scanner/computer does not lose power during the update.

Ok on the updater only updating/charging to the latest firmware

And yup I will make sure my computer is plugged in when I am doing it.

And guessing it doesn’t take long to update the firmware once and when I start to do it.

Setup_BC_VUP.msi

msi = Microsoft Software Installer

Actually either one will work.
