ok,68 views and no replies.Guys...I'm not talking about AA or triple AAA or C batteries that would go into a battery compartment with a door, because it obviously doesnt have that.
I'm talking about a disk type like the one in your computer, about the size of a nickle, that is used to keep cmos settings or something similiar .Surely there are some 996 owners that know one way or the other. Why would you need a battery level indicator if there is no battery?

There is no battery inside. Also, there is no battery level indicator. Whatever you are looking at must be something else.

Those bars are not battery strength they are signal strength. The 996 series scanners do not have any form of battery.

There is a seperate indicator for signal strength. The battery level indicator is two spaces to the right of the signal strength indicator.

This applies to the 396 and 996
http://info.uniden.com/twiki/bin/view/UnidenMan4/ReadingTheDisplay

.As you can see,top row right, there is a battery indicator, which I can verify shows up on my 996.It reads full.

While searching for the above link,I now notice a notation that it is for handhelds only....which leads me to my next question..
Why do we need a battery level indicator on a scanner that has no battery. It was only because of that indicator that I suspected
it might have a battery of some sort.

I couldnt get the image to show up,maybe because its a PNG,but the link will bring you to the same image in Unidens manual.
I forgot what I did to make the battery indicator light up,but it is definitly there.

Also, found on this site, specifically referring to the BCD996XT,as a feature
http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/BCD996XT

Follow this link and look under "features"...it clearly states "battery level display"

Like I said,I have seen the indicator show up on my 996,but forgot what I did to make that happen.

I'm emailing uniden support to see what they have to say about it.

My understanding is that the 396 and 996 are essentially the same scanner - just one is a HH and the other desktop. Instead of creating multiple displays, they may be using the same one (and instruction manual) to save on manufacturing costs and only enabling the necessary segments of the display as appropriate for the model.

EMTLJB has it close. The 996 and 396 scanners (both the XT versions and the original ones) share a lot of common features, parts and programming protocols. When such resources are shared minute differences are often overlooked in producing literature, such as manuals, reviews and spec sheets. In addition many parts are common to multiple radio types.

Sometimes this leads to oddities like references to batteries in radios that do not have them, such as seen here. When I wrote reviews of these radios and others I made the same mistake by failing to strike the references to feature differences with one radio when modifying it for another. It is even worse for the GRE radios, which are closer mobile/portable versions of each other, much more in common with each other than the Unidens share.

The upshot is that the 996 does not have any batteries, for operation or memory retention. Any references to batteries on the 996 can be disregarded.
