Dumb idea for any 396 user.

Just use the belt clip and hook it to your visor.

No flames, please. Just my opinion.

I like it for mobile, as a base extention, and handy use. If I want a quick setup for a mobile without the BCT15 or 996 I'll just grab the 396 hook up to the RH and go. It's simple to use and adapts to the radio in use.

The new Uniden BC-RH96 Remote Head is just an awesome add-on to any of the supported scanners. I use mine on the BCD396T as a base and after doing a small mod to it, (On/Off Switch) I made it behave exactly to my liking. I use it every day. The display is really bright. I have absolutely nothing negative to report about it. This is only my opinion, of course, YMMV.

I agree! What good is a remote head that's much larger than the whole radio itself! It would make sense with the BCD996T, but with the BCD396T? I don't see any advantage. By the time you add a speaker, good grief!

I disagree! lol For the mobile setup it makes perfect sense to me. You have your RH96 mounted to the dash or whereever, you connect your 396 to it and put it out of the way, and then control the whole deal from the remote head just like having a true mobile radio. I know in my case, I already have a Motorola speaker mounted in the truck all the time, and a magmount Larsen antenna on the roof. So in my view, I think it works great for a mobile setup, and if you leave the vehicle, you can disconnect it then put in your belt and go.

But as with anything here, to each their own.

It makes the 396 (and I'd guess the 330) much easier to use as a mobile. The display is larger, the controls are easier to access, and you as Alan pointed out, you still have a portable radio. It's a great option when I'm not in my own vehicle and don't want to lug the 996T along. I use the head and 396 in my vehicle at work and plan to use it when we take my wifes car on trips.

The only negatives are that the head doesn't control the power to the scanner and that audio isn't routed through the head. Neither a deal killers IMHO.

The fact that it supports "4" models is amazing. These options were not available on the 780 and 785/796 Scanner Master versions. Their RH kits were only for one or two models, needed an internal mod to the radio, and attachment of the radio head to a box to work as a remote head. For the Uniden version, plug in an external speaker of your choise, plug the cable from the head to the sub-mini RS232 remote port and supply power. Turn on the RH and it configures to the model you use, in whatever configuration you want to use.

That's because the newer radios were designed with this option in mind. Earlier Uniden scanners were not, and the remote-head option was an after thought.

After thought because nobody at Uniden looked at it until they listened to the end user, thanks to UPMan. Scanner Master did well at the time when such things were only available in the amateur radio market.

Any tips on how to make a remote on/off? I am considering the remote head for my 396 but would like to figure out some kind of remote on/off set-up.

A SPST power switch in-line with the (+) positive (RED) power lead should to it.

I am thinking about buying a BC-RH96 for the car.

Could someone please clear this up for me?

If I mount the BC996T in the trunk- and route the necessary cabling to the remote head- there will be no way to turn the scanner on or off from the remote head? The volume cannot be controlled by the remote head?

Perhaps I should download the RH-96 manual and re-think the idea.

Currently use the 396T mounted to the console- but I am not happy with the setup.

Regards, Commscanaus.
