Hey All,
I just ordered a BCT-15 today and was wondering what software to buy for programming?
Or what can I get for FREE?

Let Me know,

I use free scan myself for my BCT15X. I say try Freescan first see how you like it. if you decide it's not for you it hasn't cost you a dime. If you run out and buy first then realize you don't need all that it offers, then you are out your money. Can't go wrong by trying the free stuff first!

Another vote for FreeScan. It should be more than adequate if you only need the computer to input channels into the scanner.

I have a BCT15X in the mail and hope to also pick up a BCD996XT sometime in May.

Now, with all the suggestions for FreeScan, it definitely deserves to be checked out. Though, I'm most curious if it will work with downloaded data sets. (For example, if I remember correctly, premium subscribers here used to have access to data downloads that could be uploaded to their scanner via another program that used to be popular.)

Also, could anyone tell me if FreeScan allows for setting up trunked systems, etc.? I'm going to go find it later today and try to play with the software, but my 15X won't be here until Tuesday, so there's only so much I can discover (on my own) at the moment. Thanks!

What do you mean by 'downloaded data sets'? FS has the ability to import UASD and BuTel data, and also use the RR Web import. For data that is in a table format, the EZ-Grab function will pull that data, but it works best using FireFox as your browser.

If you're new to DMA based scanning, here's an article that will help - the 2nd link is to FreeScan's user guide, which is also wiki based...

Uniden DMA FAQ - The RadioReference Wiki

At the bottom are the links to the Easier to Read manuals. I'd either download the appropriate XT manuals or go to Scanner Master and buy the book - which is also linked there.

FreeScan User Guide - The RadioReference Wiki

and yes, FS can set up trunked systems....

best regards..Mike

Woot! Mike, that's a lot of info. So, before I say anything else, let me say thank you. I really appreciate it. Now on to business...
What do you mean by 'downloaded data sets'?
Well, to be clear, I was using the term generically. It was in reference to (mainly) to whatever the format is that RR allows (or used to allow) for the premium sub's. From what I remember hearing some time back, there was a huge wealth of data available for premium sub's to access for their area of operations, etc.

And I'm (still) under the impression that said data is pretty much invaluable when setting up a scanner. I'm in NE Ohio, and I'm pretty sure it would take me less time to walk to the North Pole than it would to program my scanner(s) by hand with all the info I want to plug in to them.
...but it works best using FireFox as your browser.
What a coincidence! That's me favorite browser. :D
If you're new to DMA based scanning...
Yes, sir, I am. I was a scanning amateur many moons ago with my Pro-62 and shiny new copy of Police Call. But, alas, life got in the way. And then I tried again a few years back -- HOLY CRAP!

I just went to an old post of mine here to get its link and I just saw you answered my post back then with some great advice! Three years ago! LOL! I am certainly grateful to know that you're still around!

I got far too overwhelmed last time to stay involved with the hobby. Too much had changed. But the ironic thing now is, I just want to get some things set up so I can practice monitoring a little and learn a little more before I begin studying up for the tech license exam. I've spent the last month reading up and learning many things before I even bothered ordering a scanner. And I want the scanner mostly so I can monitor some of the amateur bands, etc.

Anyway, I'm seriously hijacking and derailing this thread both at the same time. So, let me thank you for the info thus far and please allow me to plead for much more info in the future. Again, thanks much and take care!
