I recently wanted to take my BCT15 with me camping and wasnt near the car. Hand helds are great for travel, but they just don't have the feature set of the base units.

so i went and picked up the following

two vapex 3700mah 10 cell batts (this battery will hold 3.7ah at ~14v max charge) 20$ a pop on ebay

I had a multi cell charger for lion so that wasnt needed however you can purchase any 10 cell charger on ebay and they will work

i also picked up a few of the connectors for DC (RS Model: 21-550) i used this input rather then the small plug because the "cb style" jack appeared to run thru the transformer on the motherboard, allowing me to not worry about the 14v high load with a new battery.

and shrink tube to make it all nice.

my only caution is that when you put it together dont short your battery you have 3amps of power waiting to pop.

i have more then 8 hours of runtime so far with the battery, since the radio pulls 500mh at slow rate i could easily get 24 hours of runtime depending on the volume of the speaker.

with a good charger you can recharge the battery in 1 hour (i charged them the first time in two hours)

i also put the unit into a backpack in a custom box i made of wood so that the antenna isnt hurt i then just run radio quality 3ft of BNC to a diamond RH77CA antenna mounted to my little box the battery also is stuck - so basically i have a small shack to go.

i will normally set the radio and walk around with headphones. or when I am at a game or track or parade i have the backback in front of me so that i can work the radio.

i thought of using a external mount head for controlling the radio while its in my backpack.

this makes the better 15/996 radios portable, since I have no need to have something in my hand this worked great for me.

if people are interested i can post pictures
