Have two of these. One in the truck and the other here on the base. ::pROBLEM.. WHAS WORKING GREAT, SHUT IT OFF CAME BACK LATER TURN THE SCANNER ON "NO SOUND". TOOK IT APART ALL LOOKED OK SPEAKER SEEM TO LOOK OK. PLUG IN AN EXTERNAL SPEAKER WORKS GREAT. DO NOT REALLY WANT TO HAVE TO RUN AN EXTERNAL SPEAKER BUT MIGHT HAVE TO. HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM OR KNOW WHAT I MIGHT DO TO FIX IT? ALL THE REST OF THE SCANNER WORKS GOOD.
Thank you

Even though the speaker may look fine the tiny wire in the coil may have gone open circuit somewhere that you cannot see it.

Or it could be the external speaker jack. The contacts that are supposed to close back up to pass the audio on to the internal speaker when the external speaker is unplugged could be dirty or bent and not making contact.

Depends on if you use the external jack very much or not.

But since you described it as all of a sudden no sound when you turned it on then I am leaning toward a spike in current in the speaker when you turned it on.

Get the particulars from off the speaker and they should be fairly easy to match-up at a decent electronics store and probably not expensive.

Bct8 ??? Sound

Thank you Dave. I use ex-speakers on almost all of my units. This one I took out of the truck set it on the shelf and was there about six months or so. IF I WERE TO PLUG THE SPEAKER FROM ANOTHER SCANNER IN THE SOCKET WHERE THIS PLUGS IN AT INSIDE WILL THAT HURT? i WILL GIVE IT A LOOK AND SEE IF IT MIGHT BE DIRTY.
Thank you for the HELP.

If it came out of the truck and then sat on the shelf for six months some corrosion sure could have formed on the speaker jack stopping the internal from working. If you have a spare scanner speaker that works it would be fine to swap it out to test.

I have had the same problem with older scanners. A good radio repair man told me the speakers they use are not very good quality. Radio Shack has replacements.
