• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Got my GMRS license, and I'm looking to buy a pair for family use. Anyone have any thoughts or advice on the best radios to get? I'm looking for good quality and reasonably rugged radios.

Sort of depends on what your budget is and what features you are looking for.
There are plenty of good higher end consumer grade GMRS radios that would fit that requirement.
But I suspect you are looking for something better?
There are several commercial radios that have Part 95 certification and would be perfectly legal to use on GMRS.
I have a couple of Icom F21's sitting on my bench waiting to be rehab'd and used on GMRS. Those are inexpensive on the used market, durable and simple.
Kenwood TK-3180 is also a good option.

There are plenty of CCR GMRS radios, but that's not how I roll.

Go with one of the radios @mmckenna suggested, or for family purposes, you could go with a few Garmin Rinos if budget allows. I’m suggesting them because they will send location info from one to the other and allow someone to navigate to the other unit’s position. They have a camera so you could snap a photo of camp and then, at any point, recall the photo and navigate back to where the photo was taken. It’s a simple way to communicate and navigate. They are really cool tech, but they are expensive…

For durable voice-only mobiles, go with commercial equipment. Motorola HT750s can be found on eBay for $75 and MT1000s at $40-50. Plan on buying a new battery. Many sellers can program to your wishes as part of the deal. The radio is simple to operate, built like a tank, and will last forever. Same for mobiles and repeaters if you get that far. For the money, its a great investment. Stay away from the Chinese junk.

The Garmin Rino's are way too expensive for the kids. If you want to track them get the new BTech Pro, they cost $139.00 each but send their GPS location to a mapping app on your phone. You can even send text messages like the Rino's. They say the antennas aren't removable but that's to satisfy the FCC. They come off rather easily. If you aren't worried about tracking them through the use of the GPS then grab the Radioddity GM-30, a great radio for $40.00 and they charge via USB.
