The "old system" was a badly hacked together mixed VHF/UHF LTR system that should never have been used for public safety in the first place.
That system had problems from day one and I am glad it is being
scrapped.
This move to VIPER will finally give Brunswick County a reliable
communications system along with allowing them Interoperability
with many other agencies across NC.
VIPER does have various conventional channels available if needed
such as 8TAC/8CALL and NC conventional freqs but works great
as a trunked system.

But whatever happen to the 'old' system? it worked some areas could use more voting receivers, there are plenty of VHF or UHF freq's that they could use for fire ground or vehicle repeaters at alot less cost?
could not these newer radios be made to conventional ?
I always wondered when in New York City, thier FD used 1 vhf channel for each county (known as Boro's) and 5 fire ground VHF for 7 million people - now they added UHF same set up, maybe more f/g channels and additional inter mutual aid - and more radios - trucks and portables than Brunswick to Hanover will ever have - it works for them why not Brunswick?
