I did communications for day ops Sunday thru today for this incident. We did indeed use State Fire for the command net and operations due to the fact that most agencies that came in the first two days already had it. We didn't have to issue radios till today when some of the out of state resources came in.

We also used Wilkes Fire 1, NC Park Service repeater, and Federal Park Service repeater.

It was mountainous terrain and we actually lost radio contact with some of the teams occasionally but today I had a "repeater" set up--a guy with a mobile radio halfway up the search area to relay traffic. Worked well too. The team that found the child was in a valley; another team that was on a ridge above them had to relay the message that he had been found.

This was also the maiden voyage for Catawba County's new mobile command post. Command was run out of it; two mini-consoles with 8 channels with VHF-Low, VHF-Hi, UHF, 800 mhz motorola and EDACS, computers everywhere--the big terrain maps that kept showing up on the news were printed off a plotter in the bus, lots of great stuff that helped this operation to be a success. I hope to have some pics that we got this morning when we were cranking up ops that I can post. The guys from our comm center and Emergency Services who put this vehicle together can really be proud of themselves, they were instrumental in making this search operation a success.

All in all it was a very good day.

Oh, that bus is definately going to need some serious cleaning before anyone can get a tour. Dirt on the floor deep enough to plant corn in it, boxes and bags of cookies, doughnuts, etc, trash, forms, maps and papers hanging all over the walls. It really got broke in right. Looked like a real CP by the end of the operation.

Plus, there's still some tweaking to be done on the radios and computers.

Pictures will have to suffice for right now but give me a couple months. I just wanted to brag on the guys who put it together, they did a great job. Considering some of the facilities I've had to work out of on operations, this was the height of comfort and utility.

You see more NC State Park Rangers in the one picture than anyone else. The word was there were only two US Park Rangers on scene and yet they seemed to be the Media/PR people!

Oh, and thank you for the great quality photos! We don't get many photos in the NC forums!
