I have been listening to bradley county lately on 154.205 pl 100.0 and have been hearing what appears to be some type of voice inversion does anyone know why or for how long they have been using this.

I was just in the Bradley County/Polk County area a few weeks ago and heard the same thing. I visit the area a few times a year and that was the first time I've heard it also.

bradley fire/ema

yea I know I was listening yesterday and heard them talking everthing was normal but sunday they were using voice inversion. Maybe they were just trying it out just in case they have a situation where they might need to use it in the future but personally why would the fire departments use it or could it be something for the ema to use to pass on crtitical and sensitive info without the public knowing.

Athens police, just up the road, uses full-time voice inversion. I have wondered whether the voice inversion sounding stuff on 154.205 is really just bleedover from Athens PD, since the 154.205 repeater gets pounded with interferance. If the repeater gets opened with crud it's possible other crud like Athens can find it's way in. The only time I've heard this is when the 154.205 repeater is getting opened by interferance out of the county.
Otherwise, if Bradley Fire-Rescue is really using voice inversion, it's easy to decode. There are "boxes" or now software out there that will allow you to listen to voice inversion. Don't know if this falls under the "listening to encryption is illegal" category, since voice inversion is kind of like signal sideband used for CB and amateur radio.
But why the fire department needs to scramble or encrypt their traffic is beyond me! In most departments, if there's sensitive information to pass along, firefighters use their Nextels or cellphones.
Interesting to see how this works out for Bradley County Fire!

Athens PD is not full time V/I If you listen to them enough you will find some of them do talk in the clear on a regular basis.

And as for: is monitoring a V/I signal illegal? Yes it is, so if you have a "black" box, dont get caught my friend. Federal crime & the DOJ will file charges.
