Standoff ends when suspect gives himself up

Date: August 9, 2005

BIRD CITY - A Bird City man was arrested Monday after a high-speed chase on Cheyenne County roads after county law enforcement attempted to arrest him for criminal threat.

Officers with the Cheyenne County Sheriff's office attempted to serve an arrest warrant on Vertie Earl Bolyard, 69, for a domestic violence related situation with his wife, Rose.

Cheyenne County Sheriff Troy Gardner said officers conducted a traffic stop just before 10 a.m. along U.S. Highway 36 about 6 miles west of town.

Gardner said Bolyard fled and drove in excess of 80 mph on dirt roads to his rural residence 9 miles south of Bird City. Also at the farmstead is a gun and pawn shop that Bolyard has owned since 1961, said his son, Vertie Lance Bolyard, Colby.

Authorities blocked off the area and spent eight hours trying to make contact with him.

The problem we had was making contact with him. We were unable to reach him by telephone, Gardner said.

Gardner said Vertie Earl Bolyard was in and out of the house. The Kansas Highway Patrol Special Response Team finally reached Bolyard by phone after eight hours, the sheriff said. Bolyard turned himself in without incident.

He was taken to Goodland Regional Hospital with chest pains, Vertie Lance Bolyard said. From there, he was taken to the Sherman County Jail in Goodland, where he was being held in lieu of $10,000 bond.

Medic 44 is advising Code Yellow with entrapment.

A single-vehicle accident on Interstate 70 east of Salina early Wednesday morning sent one person to the hospital and scattered debris across the road. Trooper Scott Walker from the Kansas Highway Patrol tells KSAL News that a truck fully loaded with scrap metal crashed at around 7:45 in the morning.
The truck was travelling east when the driver began to lose control and swerved to the south shoulder of the road. He over-corrected, laying the truck over on its side and sliding into the ditch.

The load of scrap metal he was hauling spilled over both eastbound lanes of the interstate. Numerous items, some as big as engine blocks and other as small a bolts and screws, scattered across the road. Traffic slowed to a crawl as KDOT crews were dispatched to clean up the mess.

The accident happened about three miles east of the Niles Road Exit. Walker says that the driver of the truck, 41-year-old Gerald Taylor, was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

While Medic 1 was enroute they reported that KHP had used AED shocking twice, Medic one had shocked 3 times, pushed meds twice, had IV going and were having all kinds of trouble keeping patient going.

Did not hear the traffic about CHART team, may have missed while monitoring Med 9.

Heard KHP dispatch orginally had Auto House enroute, they were trying to call them off as the CHART team was being called out. Then I heard Auto House had arrived on scene and they were trying to decided if CHART was or was not coming. Didn't really hear anything other than that or if CHART ever made it.

From KSAL www.ebclink.com :

A truck driver from North Carolina suffered a fatal heart attack Thursday while driving a rig on Interstate 70 in rural Saline County.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol 63-year-old Nolan Scism from Kings Mountain, North Carolina, was driving a semi tractor truck west on Interstate 70 about three miles west of Solomon when he suffered a heart attack.
The truck, which was towing three other semi tractors, left the roadway and came to rest in a wheat field.
A Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper administered CPR until EMS arrived at the scene. Scism was transported to Saline Regional Health Center where he was pronounced dead.
The accident happened at around 3:30 Thursday afternoon.

On a side note, I noticed a previous post was edited. Is there a filter looking for specific words?
