Colorado Bureau of Investigation Division Director Steve Johnson this morning provided the following information about the homicide investigation in Burlington, Colorado.
“Last night, at 6:40 pm a 911 call was made from 783 Lowell. The male juvenile caller said that there were shots fired and at least three people had been shot.
“The responding officers found five people in the residence. Two adults were found in the house with fatal injuries. They have been identified as:
“Charles LONG, 50, and Marilyn LONG, 51
“Both lived at the Lowell address.
“Two children were found in the house with wounds. Both were taken to the regional medical center where they were treated and were later flown to a hospital in Denver.
“Both are in critical condition and are being treated for their injuries.
“They are: a 5 year-old girl and an 9 year-old boy.
“They are identified as the children of Charles and Marilyn Long.
“The remaining family member in the residence at the time of the incident - who made the 911 call continues to be interviewed at this time.
“At this point, we have no reason to believe that there is a continuing risk to the community; however, we are pursuing any and all avenues in this investigation.”
Johnson, who is in charge of CBI’s division of investigation, noted also that:
--all warrants associated with this case have been sealed and remain sealed at this time. Additional details about the case cannot be provided.
--the investigation remains in preliminary stages.
--this is a joint effort involving the Burlington Police Department, the Kit Carson County Sheriff, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the 13th Judicial District Attorney.
CBI and the Burlington Police Department will provide updated information as it becomes available.
Colorado Department of Public Safety Executive Director Jim Davis, CBI Director Ronald C. Sloan and CBI Division Director Steve Johnson also called for statewide support for the Burlington community in this time of sorrow and concern.
