Over the weekend I went to a church camp & there were some call boxes located around the property. This rattled my brain some causing me to remember about hiway call boxes. Are call boxes used on major hiways anymore Or has cellphones replaced them?

CB took a toll on the callboxes and the cellphone did the rest.

There are still some around, but new ones are pretty rare.

Last time I was in New Orleans I noticed them on the I-10 bridge, at least the ones that survived Katrina. I have also seen them in other places along some of the older sections of interstate while on the road. They seem to be a common thing on college campuses and can be spotted by the blue light on top.

I'm starting to see them again along I70, there usually is a solar panel above them for power so they must be cellular or some other wireless.

We have callboxes all over the place in California. It's my understanding they use cellular technology, and are powered (often) by a solar panel and battery.

Most are cellular. I think there are still a few conventional radio ones around.

Motorola even built a trunked call ox for a while.

we have some here in Nevada, mostly between California and Las Vegas/Reno. They seem to just be a two way radio installed in a box. There are 3 Call Box TG Ids on the state trunking system, and get used daily in the summer time when unprepared travelers have car troubles.

Thats what I'm seeing. Those solar panels look nice, I'm surprised they stay there.
I was going to buy a couple like that and rebuild my UPS to get power from solar instead of 120v and waited until I got my bonus this year and the prices have went way up on solar stuff.
